Etymonline claims it's from the sense of "hypothetical law discussion". They're usually fairly good at filtering out "folk etymology", from what I hear.
Pleasing! Looks fine to me.
I made Quiver of Cobras and Smack of Jellyfish.
For Challenge # 061.
For Challenge # 061.
It's probably undercosted.
PS. I checked OED. I was sure the "mute" etymology was mentioned, but now I don't see it, so I don't know. (Moot/mute is definitely a common confusion now, but I don't know if it features in the derivation of the "pointless" sense of "moot".)
:)
Who? Mm, no. I can't say I have.
For Challenge # 061
"Moot" is used in "entmoot" in the old sense of "a meeting", however "moot" has come to acquire connotations of "pointless", possibly (?) by confusion with "mute", hence this being a pun!
I'm also interested in the drawback. Green's dabbled with "big creature you need to activate somehow". This is probably usually worse than paying full price for a 5/5, or having an echo creature or a "sac unless you pay G" creature. But sometimes it's better, if you have cards that care about maximum power, or you want to threaten an attack or block but then play something else.
For Challenge # 061
I wasn't sure how to balance this with three abilities that were useful sometimes but not too powerful. Any suggestions for streamlining them?
Herd of Herring (Doesn't fit the letter of the challenge, but I felt was close enough to the spirit to post here rather than Cards with no Home.)
Charm of Hummingbirds which... may be a pun or not.
Entmoot
For Challenge # 061
Silver bordered.
This doesn't fit the letter of the challenge, but I thought it was close enough in spirit.
I debated having a more complicated trigger, but I thought simple was better.
Curiously this makes it better to cast /before/ declaring blockers, as in most cases the opponents' blockers won't be able to block two gnu anyway. Well, unless you were using a bunch of Squadron Hawks or something.
Changed the wording slightly to something a bit more Magic-ese. Maybe better maybe worse. Don't know. Blocking creatures now block both Gnus. Good luck to them. Funny thing is, I can't figure out which is more dangerous...
You know, I didn't think of that, but I guess that's what you do with your gnu. Maybe I should have both gnu be blocked by the same creature? I like the feel of a trampling stampede of gnu here... but this kind of borders on the realm of 'My creatures are unblockable. Kind of."
So if my one attacking creature is blocked, I get a blocked gnu and an unblocked gnu?
Excellent challenge, and excellent link. There's a cornicopia of crazy collective animals in there. I chose An Implausibility of Gnus and Gulp of Swallows.
For Challenge # 061. What a bad pun of a collective group. Well, sure, I'll take it. I would have added a picture, but I couldn't find one of a large group of swallows next to bird houses. Easy to draw, but not exactly something that happens in real life... they'd all be inside.
According to Wikipedia, many breed of Swallow are rarely seen in their natural habitat anymore. They have such a long running relationship with humans that they either live out of bird houses constructed by humans, or they build their nests right under the overhangs of houses. Purple Martins are very susceptible to this... they aim to take over standard-sized bird houses. If all the bird houses were removed from North America, it is possible that the species would become extinct.
For Challenge # 061. An Implausibility of Gnus? Really? Oh, well I had to choose that one. Unfortunately, I'm not sure if I wasted it or not. I wanted to make a Un-ish card, but ended up with something absurd, but printable (the casting cost is suspect... but the ability seems fine. Just crazy good.)
Also thank you National Geographic for giving me the inspiration for this card. That Gnu leaping through the air... how did it get there? Did it literally jump off of another Gnu's back? Too much gnu!
