Not really. Timmy loves the experience of playing Magic. He isn't really interested in winning. If there's a chance that his big creature will pop up, he'll be much happier than if he consistently played his big creature.
Besides, real Timmies stack their deck full of 'big creatures' (which may or may not be very big). They can rarely choose a favorite... they prefer to play with every shiny thing they can get their hands on. They might, ideally, want to flip Borborygmos, but be super happy to instead get the Boris Devilboon that they forgot was even in this deck.
I know this is all very weird, when examined from the outside. "You love this card. Why wouldn't you want to play with it!" makes a lot of sense. But so doesn't "You had the favorable board position. It made no sense to Wrath of God there!" Often Timmy makes choices so that he/she has the most fun while playing, which leads to not winning the game and/or not playing the cards they like.
How does that make it less Timmy? Shouldn't Timmy be excited by the fact that he's even more sure of getting his big creature?
Good point. Yeah, that necessitates the cost, and makes it less Timmy Polymorph-y.
It also works with "I have a deck full of humans and one Eldrazi" while simultaneously being a kill spell against certain other decks... which probably makes it better than Polymorph at doing what Polymorph does (which is the real reason I pumped the casting cost). Some day, I'll figure out the Timmy Polymorph trick, but it ain't today...
Yeah. I like the idea of having an actually random polymorph, and it fits the picture very well. Although it still works with "I have a lot of token producers, an Eldrazi, and as many polymorphs as I can".
True. I just think it's a shame that I can't use Polymorph to summon something random out of my deck, since then I'm using it 'wrong'. I don't think we should be getting rid of Polymorph (well, it's probably
too cheap, but besides that), I just think we could use a Polymorph that Timmy would like more than Johnny.
Hmm. That's a valid point, but I'm not sure how to squeeze 'other creatures can't attack' into the black side of this and make it matter. I could put it on the white side with no problem... but then there wouldn't be as much parity.
For what it's worth, black used to to this all the time, starting with alpha and Nettling Imp and running to Onslaught's Walking Desecration (with a wink on Nettling Curse). It doesn't have it anymore since red took over in Mirrodin... but I don't think it's that much of a stretch to make one last call for it on a top-down flavor card.
As for white... well... it's not really the same ability. I don't think any color has been assigned a "now that you've dedicated yourself to attacking, you must attack like that" mentality... but it sounds like white's wheelhouse to me. Even if it uses the same exact wording as red, it's a very different effect at sorcery speed... this roughly says "You rallied your men, and they all gained exalted. It's too late to turn back now. Destiny is at hand" effect.
It's hard to say which of us is right in this scenario... because we both kind of are. This seems more about what feels right to the most amount of people. If I was to be realistic about the way people respond to new things, I'd probably have to switch Pride to red (and make it deal damage) to win my flavor point on white. Of course, I guess I'd have to change the name, too, and the picture at that rate, which is more work than I want to do right now, so we're just going to leave it the way it is. That doesn't mean I don't not agree.
It's very strange to see white and black getting the "must attack this turn" ability that is generally at home in blue and red. I'd rather this took a cue from cards like Intimidation Bolt and stopped other creatures from attacking.
But that's the whole point of Polymorph!
Added Baleful Polymorph.
For Challenge # 060. I never liked how you could set up your deck with Polymorph, but I get how "shuffle your deck" is just more uneeded words to get the card to do what it does. Shuffling the creature in your deck (as opposed to sacrificing it) gets the job done, but Polymorphing a creature into itself is... um... wrong. Luckily, that will never happen here, barring effects like Wings of Velis Vel. As for the other Polymorph problem... putting broken creatures into play... I have no answer for that...
Is there a way to sort sets like this by who created the cards? If not, can there be?
Add Pride // Prejudice to the list. Cheated by tossing an extra illustration on the fire. Shh... don't tell.
For Challenge # 060. I took a cue from Vitenka, and used a card frame that favorably squished the card art for Pride. With a split card, that meant I would either need to duplicate the original art (which... um... just wasn't working for me) or 'cheat' and add another piece of art. I went digging for another Fantasy illustration of a back tattoo, and eventually found this one, that worked for me.
Odd thing about this card... it took me a while to come up with a good name, so I could get a good mechanic. I eventually settled on "Your creatures hurt you / your creatures help you. Either way, your probably not a very good person, since you insist on attacking alone". Which kind of forced a very funny detail... the black side needs to be an isntant for the trick to work, and the white side needs to be a sorcery for so it isn't played after attackers are declared. I assume that's fine... it hasn't been done before for a reason, but I'm pretty sure it's warranted here. The casting costs are wildly different since this doubles up as creature kill, and a potential Fog for black.
