"Telling time" version could be "Reveal the top three cards of your archive. You may put a resource from among them into the warzone tapped. Then put one into your hand and the rest on the top or bottom of your library in any order."
Farwander
For Challenge # 108. I really like the lines in this particular piece of art. I also really liked how this wasn't your standard fighting creature that Magic hits us over the heads with. I figured it would be cool to make a very non-aggressive creature out of her. But when amuseum made some quick surface names for the card art, I had to admit that "Time-Walk Variant" was a much better match.
So I got green-blue sorcery stuck in the head, and I eventually came up with this (Actually, what I got first was "Coiling Oracle", then removed the creature, and added Sleight of Mind.) Seems a bit weak... but not in an obvious way, and works well with non-basics. I tried upping Sleight of Mind to Telling Time, but the wording was too convoluted, and maybe that was too good? 75% chance Rampant Growth plus cantrip seems strong for GU.
I came up with Slain Summoner
I also created Restion Faunaformer for Unfathomable Experiments.
Ah, yes, fair point. I recall that Greatbow Doyen's ability was nicknamed "piercing arrows", so yes, you're probably right.
Added Hack the Mainframe. This challenge needed some black cards, for realsies this time.
For Challenge # 108. When I look at this artwork, I just want to play pinball. No really... it looks like the backboard artwork of a pinball machine arcade game.
Anyhow, I took a closer look at the art, and noticed that her 'hair' is technically a bunch of plugs. So, this.
Ooh, interesting. Would "to each creature blocking it and to defending player" feel more penetrating? I'm worried "each blocking creature" feels more like a spreading weapon.
Actually, let's make it optional, that way it's slightly better, and can just be "You know the top card of your deck"
Huh. Guess ending up similar to a card I've never heard of means I got the power level about right. This has you do the choosing and is a bit pricier, but otherwise yes.
Yeah; the glossary didn't give that step a name, so I took the liberty of simplifying S:tC by eliminating it :)
Pretty good with artifact creatures that have death triggers, too. But sure, it's pretty niche. S'why I made it rare. goes gonzo in multiplayer too ;)
I changed it to "beginning of next end cycle after this one". That gets me all squirmy, but the timing is unclear otherwise.
I know... the dark colors in the artwork lead me to blue-black, not the mechanic. That said, flicker effects don't normally last this long, maybe it's kind of black to keep them away for an extended period of time? Probably not.
After each untap step? As in "at the beginning of each upkeep"? Fair enough. Also needs to be "reveal" rather than "look at" for verifiability.
But terminology nitpicking aside, this is interesting. I don't think it's very playable. You sometimes draw an extra card, if your deck is sufficiently stuffed with artifacts, but at the steep cost of creatures on the battlefield. Unless you've got some token making that's not a cost you'll want to pay, which means this only goes in an artifact tokens deck, which isn't unknown but is fairly unusual.
Very interesting. Remind me of Burning-Tree Shaman, but this is a very different way to punish activated abilities.
Has a number of fun combos as well. Pair with Brawl to trigger all your Sprouting Phytohydra copies in quick succession :)
The X=0 case is actually more efficient than has been printed - it's an overloaded Electrickery for 1 mana not 2. And I think that's the way to think of it: an Electrickery or one-sided Tremor with a kicker to burn the player. Of course, don't think of it exclusively like that or you'll miss the occasional chances to kill the opponent with it :)
You said "this challenge really needed some black cards"... but I'm afraid this isn't one :-> This is after all a mass blink effect, something like Ghostway.
The second bit is reminiscent of Vedalken Shackles. The first is actually cheaper than looting has been accessible to any colour but blue. I wouldn't have said a reusable creature steal needed any other effect, but I agree the hacking flavour is quite compelling.
Alright, time to start working on my own challenge. Added Cataclysmic First Contact. Man, this challenge really needed some black cards. ;)
For Challenge # 108. Vitenka mentioned these guys are attacking a giant space whale with bows and arrows, but they're really going at it with swords, in a way that's both admirable and alarming. It's as if they don't register the complete disparity between them and this monstrosity.
Originally, this was an enchantment that triggered whenever you cast a six cost... but that didn't really match the name or the mood, so I tinkered. Then I realized I didn't need to follow normal Magic rules, and altered the way the Suspend mechanic operates. I suppose 'Suspend - 4' can still be a thing in S:tC. It's just now, if there's no value following it, cards with Suspend exile until something else unsuspends them.
By the by, 'deploy' means 'cast', not 'enter the battlefield', which would be kind of silly. You're supposed to get in one good shot with your big creature (or at least delay the opponent's assault.)
