Thank you!
OK, let's make the pretty way for multiverse for now, but I agree it would probably be different for printing. I'm not sure how -- if they had a major cycle of half-hybrid, wizards could adjust the printing, but there'd still be a question that it was more symmetric with W in the middle, but usually the fixed colour mana costs go last.
Re-ordered mana cost
Ideally I'd push it to the point where it was unexciting at GG but slightly too good for 1G, but I'm not sure if I can find that sweet spot.
Thank you!
Yeah, I'm pretty sure this would be a fine GR creature, maybe more so than GG. My only worries were, firstly, this is sliiiiiightly easier to cast than Garruck's Companion, so it's actually strictly better. I think that's ok in a pushed cycle in a hybrid set, but I'm not sure. And secondly, I'm not sure if RR can't get this, because if it can this should maybe be
.
But I'm glad the idea comes across. I think I could make twenty of these, but I probably won't :)
Niiicely done.
The aesthetics of this card on Multiverse would look nicer if the
bits of the mana cost were all on the inside:

. However on a printed card that wouldn't look so good, because they're still printing hybrid mana symbols 20% bigger than any other mana symbol :/ (See Thopter Foundry or Manamorphose for example.)
Mm, I like this less than Goblin Treecrasher, because as you say this could just cost
. If this were to be printed I'd expect one cycle of five monocolour cards with off-colour casting triggers going one way around the wheel.
Hmm. It's a pity he doesn't actually do anything when he hits an opponent unless you have other Ninjas out.
How about you make one or other of the triggers just "target creature"? Much more flexible and interesting that way.
I suppose that's making this even closer to Sakashima's Student, though. This is already treading pretty close to that card even as it is.
Yep, that seems spot on. Garruk's Companion is okay (albeit slightly pushed). Goblin Deathraiders is okay, and green gets beefier creatures than black, so I'm pretty sure
is okay for a 3/2 trample as well. Nicely done.
Added Thundering Boar, a different twist on Goblin Treecrasher, and Endurance Charm.
Was "prevent all combat damage to you" but that wasn't clearly W not G
See Challenge # 118.
Another take on half-hybrid. What if three-colour charms were easier to cast? Here we are supposed to have an effect which can be in W or B, W or G, and a qunitessentially W effect, all with a loosely Abzan flavour.
I find it really hard to choose the right strengths for charms. This should probably be a bit weaker than Abzan Charm since it can be cast in more decks, but not too weak as it still needs three coloured mana.
See Challenge # 118.
This is the other side of the coin to Goblin Treecrasher. It's pushed a bit less hard, but functions a bit like kicker in giving you a RG creature if you can cast it that you can't easily get in most colours at common, but if you don't have the mana is still castable on-curve.
I think adding "if you spent" is a bit of a cheat that undermines the hybrid-ness, but it's a good idea I found while looking for other half-hybrid cards online. It's a bit like kicker, but doesn't require a whole extra mana to work, so lets you be on-curve either way. But in this case, it could probably cost
with the same effect, so it doesn't make the case as well as it might. Maybe it should have trample as well?
And like Goblin Treecrasher, if this happened, you'd have to decide how many cards to have in the cycle -- do you have the full twenty of all CD combinations both ways round, or have asymmetric cycle of GR, RB, BU, UW, WG, or somewhere in between?
See Challenge # 118.
My logic is, there are some cards that could be GR or GG. When does it matter? On turn two, when GR might be two hard to cast, but
might be too generous and let RR get what it shouldn't.
In a deck with lots of non-tapped dual-lands, this is almost no benefit over GG or GR. But if you want to have a primary-G GR deck made primarily of forests and mountains, it matters a lot that you can get this out on-curve.
Obviously you could do something similar with
, but I think there's some justification for the half-hybrid. I think this is GG or GR but not RR, but I was trying to think of an example which was even clearer (maybe having a keyword from G only and one from
etc).
I have a related design coming up next oo.
Yeah, what Alex said. I wasn't previously convinced there WAS any niche for half-hybrid, but I've enjoyed brainstorming it.
Started with Goblin Treecrasher.
Several people used to argue that red should get sorcery-speed-bounce. If so, this would fit perfectly as either RR or UR. Yeah, maybe not quite in mono red with the current pie, but it really should exist in UR in proper magic! :)
Since Kamigawa is sorely lacking in commander material, I made Black-Nose.
See Challenge # 114.
Done for a design challenge. I figured Kamigawa could use some multicolored commanders, so I made one for Ninjas. In the Kamigawa books, Black-Nose was a nezumi ninja who was actually Sakashima the Impostor in disguise. I figured this made him ideal for a
creature. I made his ability resemble Sakashima's, while trying to give it synergy with other ninjas.
The command zone ability was added as an afterthought. I'm worried it might make the card too wordy. What do you think? (I could also shuffle him into the library...)
Im not quite sure of the mana costs or templating. Advice, comments, and criticism are welcome!
I made Upwelling's Pull.

card than a
card.
Actually I suppose this breaks the pie a bit. Red gets dash effects, as on Mardu Scout, which is how I came to this, but honestly this feels more like a
Anyway, I guess semi-hybrids might make sense in the second Anydria set?
Yes, this is a challenging challenge. I don't particularly care for semi-hybrid, which makes it even harder. Hmm.
Mm. The big challenge of these is to find a reason for it to not be just a monocoloured card. E.g. something costing
: why doesn't it just cost
? There are ways to answer that, of course, which is what this challenge is asking for.
