Tried a few variants on this. Wanted "escape" flavour, but also "return to hand" to be a drawback. Played with returning to hand being optional immediately instead of protection (to avoid mass removal), but was too complicated.
Similar to honoured dead (sp?), but stronger, yet can't do damage and be regenerated. Too good for white?
"Alter ego" is a bit of a generic concept, considering several other cards have mode-shifting as well.
Several creatures have "XC: become ?/? and gain xxxx until end of turn" to simulate "secret identity" flavour, but how to avoid this being too prevalent at common (if it's only one creature, it's ok, but if you have multiples, blocking is too complicated).
White commons not as convincing as blue?
Oh, you're right, possibly it should be optional. What I was thinking was that it probably wouldn't be long before you had something you could play it on, even if that wasn't quite optimal.
(But I agree, the current version isn't common, but I'm probably not going to tweak cards one-by-one, just recognise what would be changed if I did a thorough update.)
No, because you're missing the little words "You may" or "Up to one" for the targets, you can't play it at all unless you can target a creature you control/own and an inst/sorc in your GY.
