Reprint of Opal Champion. Oh, I'm adding white cards to the Magic 20XX file. You know how you can tell? I want to keep saying things like "Opal Champion encourages play to slow down, and for you to keep cards in your hand. Wisdom, wisdom, blah, blah, wisdom."
All the other cards in 20XX require only 5 cards to be active. The spader, however, needs 7 if it wants to stay a common.
I used to worry about this guy looking better than he played, after I saw a number of players play him as a useless dork. I didn't feel so bad after I saw Hoju play him in a real Wisdom deck, intentionally skipping a beat so that the Spader could stay active and effect the game. Worked well for him.
Reprint of Indomitable Will, and belonging to the cycle that contains Alexis Cloak, Tiger Claws and Exhalambation.
He makes you feel like you can do so much. It's like Wizards said "Oh, hey, you can cheat now. Mostly, because you'll never be able to break this in any real way. But have fun pretending you're doing it!"
You know, that's one of the things that got me going on this in the first place. No shuffling is, like, The Holy Grail of Rampant variants...
Sometimes I get lucky.
Interestingly, this will be far quicker to resolve than Lay of the Land, because you don't need the shuffle. It'd be interesting to see a set with a variety of common wishes for simple things (well, I suppose that's what 20XX is).
Good call on preemptying Typhoid Rats. I remember when Toxic Iguanar seemed good.
Looks like a pretty nice combat trick to me. Probably
more expensive than it needs to be, but nonetheless looks fine.
I've always been fond of coal stoker. I'm not sure why.
Not much to say about this guy, except that, geez... sometimes getting the artwork on these guys is rough. How many Good-aligned Thrull Soldiers do you know?
Hey! It's the card that got me started on this set in the first place. Originally, this card was a Rampant Growth variant, but needs of the set turned it into Lay of the Land. After having a conversation about this idea with a friend, and having him mull out the possiblities of putting two or three land in the sideboard, and none in the main deck, it became obvious that common wishing would be kind of neat. Assuming you wished for simple things.
Originally, this was an insect, but I needed more Gorgons in the file, and figured I could slip them in green. Funny that I chose to make this a Druid, but it doesn't produce mana in any way. Magic probably needs more classes that don't do their 'job' occasionally, though, I suspect others would argue against that.
Reprint of Tiger Claws. I got to admit, out of all the flashing enchant creatures, this one I'm the least enamored with. When it lines up, it has the potential to either save a dude, or deal damage, but how often does it line up? I don't know, since I've never bothered to play it. I keep thinking that maybe I should just make different one... but this set is 50/50 reprint, and there's no specific reason to make something better than this. It does its job. I just wish every card could be exciting in its own right...
I don't have a tremendous amount to say about Tangle Spider, except that it's much better than it looks. I know plenty of players in Mirrodin draft who threw down their cards in disgust because they were blocked by a creature they passed multiple times. Also, the original file had 4 anti-flyers, and maybe 4 flying creatures? That got changed.
A funny Titania's Boon riff in that it rarely misses... but each time I've played it, I've had to work to put all my creatures on the table, then make sure I had enough cards to cover all my creatures. It seems this card is right where it wants to be.
Reprint of Provoke. You know, looking back, I think this card is a bit unnecessary. I like my green to have a bit more control... but this set has slowtrips in it. Shouldn't I work to get rid of all the obvious cantrips, then? Probably. Maybe I'll toss a single green slowtrip in...
