Recent updates to Mashup: the Gathering Alpha: (Generated at 2026-01-11 19:54:55)
I needed more lifegain in common, for reasons discussed on Junkyō Komon. So green common lifegain spell was chosen and I randomly generated Flight. Flying zebra flight.
Flight turns into Reach, plus some lifegain is the first thing that jumped to my mind... but reach gets overused when mashing up... it's an obvious analogue to flying. That, and I'd probably have to reward 3 or 4 life in the exchange for that card to be usable... and Gladhanding Genie wants something smaller. Islandwalk does a good switch out, though.
It almost seems strange putting islandwalk on a green enchant creature, though I don't know why. Green's had that for years. I don't know... strange...
Originally, this was a 2/4, but that was based on a world where gaining life only happened in one in six matchups. As it stands now, Magic: the Gathering Alpha has a cycle of common boons, and will have two life gain spells in common in both green and white (and if another one pops up, I'll probably let it join the fun). That means, in a draft, you'd be unlikely not to see a lifegain spell. Increased to 2/5 to reflect that.
Looking at my file, I have a number of things that happen 'When player X gains life'. That being the case, I decided that green and white should both have an additional way to gain life at common in the file. I chose white first, and randomly generated... oh... I got Anodet Lurker. Well that's right on the money. If I wanted, I could have made it a 3/4, but 3/3 sounds fine. I also made the ability targeting, so it can, for example, trigger Gladhanding Genie.
Hymn To Tourach. Hymn to him, I say!
Oh, yes, Mind Rot. Sometimes I wonder if I even need a random Magic card generator. My mind seems to do that work for me.
Did you really mean Megrim, or something like Mind Rot?
Hole filling, I chose Megrim and Random Generator gave me Kyren Legate. Man, that Masque mechanic wasn't as strong as it could have been. I've never seen someone live the dream and drop four Kyren Legates out, with, I don't know, a Raging Goblin on turn one. Oh well.
Due to how powerful this effect is, I couldn't imagine making it discard two cards when playing white decks. Get lucky, draw 3 of that card, and on round 1, you can nail your opponent for 6 cards (I did think of requesting that each player control a correct colored creature instead, or you control a Swamp and a Mountain... but the results are the same when the stars align. Complete blowout. That can't be fun.) Specter's Wail seems fine, though... and I always felt that card was underpowered. It will do. I'd prefer something with a bit more card advantage in this slot... but I can be happy with this.
I was looking to make a Rebuke Hole filler, then came across this on the workbench. Yeah, that will probably be fine.
Hole filling, I chose Giant Growth and random generator gave me Jalum Tome. This is a bit of an awkward mashup... these hole fillers are problematic. When you combine an instant and a permanent, the temptation is to make another permanent. Making the permanent bow to the instant somehow feels wrong. I'm cool with the card, though. Just wish you could read more Jalum Tome out of it.
