Effects targetting ~ may only be played any time their controller could play a sorcery? That's not very vanilla, but gets the "red tape" feel, will sometimes be revelant, and doesn't require people to remember what "protection" means :)
jmg: Well, you were complaining about getting the simple ones, so getting Bureaucracy serves you right! :P :)
I'm not sure I see the "protection from instants" particularly fitting... but I don't really have much of a better idea. You could have a black creature that accumulates +1/+1 counters until it exceeds the size of an opponent's hand, at which point you sac it and they discard their hand? ...But that's really not very french vanilla...
Could the simplest kind of discard saboteur trigger count as french vanilla? A Headhunter without morph, or a Mindstab Thrull? Maybe not...
If you're going to keyword *breathing, you need to make sure to do it right. Where "right" is defined as making sure that Foxfire Oak has burninglogbreathing.
This is strictly better than Cinder Crawler (and Pygmy Pyrosaur and Pyric Salamander and Spitfire Handler), but frankly, I'm jolly glad to see that. It's a nice 2-drop firebreather to match Pyre Charger, and more suitable for common than Pyre Charger.
Mashing up "mana fixer" with Gifts Ungiven is pretty likely to do that. I'd guess it's just the constraints of "common" that means this has the word "basic" on there.
Beauracracy != bureaucracy :)
Ha! Protection from Instants! Good. That gives me the essence of bureaucracy without leaving french vanilla.
Hah! something like that had to happens sooner or later, I guess :)
I'd suggest the closest mash would be something like an undercosted fatty, with "ETB: Discard your hand"
In an attempt to simplify my commons, I chose 'Vanilla/French Vanilla' and randomly generated the card Bureaucracy to mashup up with it.

Hahahhahahah!!!!111!Q I haven't the faintest clue what I'm supposed to do here. My original thought was to make a human advisor that cost

, was a 0/9 and had not flavor text. But the idea of that lack of flavor text... I don't think people will understand the joke. And 0/9 human advisor? Really?
So, I don't know. I feel I should do something unique, but many ideas fail the test. I thought about making this a 5/0, or something along those lines... but that isn't really common. I also thought about doing something like this:
wtf i dont even

Creature - Human Advisor
Switch ~'s power and toughness.
2/4
But figured that was better left for the un-sets. I don't know. Guess I'll have to sleep on it.
I like this one. I also think *breathing should have been keyworded; or at least gone back to the
:+1/+0 wording. But never mind.
It's nice to see firebreathing on something with more than 1 toughness.
I chose 'Vanilla/French Vanilla creature', and Random Generator gave me Firebreathing. Specifically, it gave me Unlimted Firebreathing, so I based the flavor around that, cracked open Tennyson's In Memorandum and found an entire poem about the hot winds of the desert. Okay, I can see why R. Garfield didn't use that... the flavor of the card is Firebreathing, not Sandblasting... but there ain't much stopping me from using it.
Two requests from vanilla and two easy cards. This card is almost an annoyance... Firebreathing is too close to French Vanilla for me to convince people that I should use something like 'First Strike' to represent it. So, quasi french vanilla it is. The casting cost and p/t are just simple ones that haven't been used yet.
This reminds me somewhat of Realms Uncharted.
:D
Hah! Yes, good point, this is absolutely perfectly suited to a deck with a 50/50 split between snow and nonsnow basics!
Clearly jmgariepy is hoarding snow-covered lands and is just offering this card idea because it would drive up demand on those lands and allow him to cash out for a boatload of money.
This is a nice simple common, but remarkably interesting. It's a colourless Lay of the Land, but somewhat unreliable. In a 5-colour deck it's great before a Kodama's Reach, but awful after it: "I bin the colour you don't have yet". I could even see two-colour decks splashing one basic land of a third colour as a mind game to make this card work to fetch the colour you're missing.
The set's commons are chunking up too much for me. That's naturally going to happen with mashups, but I still want the set to be close to playable. So I'm adding 5 more hole-filling cards... mashing up random cards with 'vanilla/french vanilla'. First card that popped up is Cho-Arrim Alchemist. Simple enough. Let's see what happens when I get something like Gifts Ungiven, eh?
Oh, the name Land Grant has been taken, on a card that has nothing to do with deeds and titles, and doesn't use a double entendre. How unfortunate. Changed name.
Hole fixing I chose 'colorless mana fixer' and random generator gave me Gifts Ungiven. I panicked a bit when I saw that I needed to translate Gifts Ungiven into a common, but it occured to me that the simplest form of this card hadn't really been done yet. Worse than Lay the Land in decks focused on green, but pretty good in 3+ color decks otherwise. I'll take it.
