Good point. Kobolds are supposed to be supported in 5 colors, so we'll give people their pick of colors.
Looked it up on Urbandictionary.com, and Wikipedia and came to the conclusion that "Hell's Bells" is not an old timey way of swearing, like "God's Wounds!" is... It's just an AC/DC song. Figured I'd pull back a little and use a pun.
Hell's Bells! Hold it... that seems like a fine replacement name...
I just noticed that this is using a name that's taken by Hell's Thunder.
"Of any one colour" (Khalni Gem), or "in any combination of colours" (Dawn's Reflection)?
Hole filling, I chose 'fast mana', and random generator chose Cenn's Tactician. Oh, weird. How did the word Kobold get in there? Oh well.
Hole filling, I chose Lightning Blast and random generator chose Hell's Caretaker. This would, of course, be right after I had a hard time with my Raise Dead variant, and insisted that I should find a way to make Teremko Griffin work before pushing that random button one more time.
Oh well. At least this ended up looking fine. It's kind of strange how activating this during your upkeep really takes a lot of the scariness out of the card. I mean, you can sacrifice your team during your upkeep I guess... nothing stopping you from doing that.
Originally, the second ability read:
: ~ blocks target blocked creature.
Which sounds cool. Then I realized that, since this creature flies, and this creature needs to be untapped to do it, it was rarely, rarely going to matter. Added clause about needing to untap... which is kind of weird, because what I really need is
. Grr... Maybe I should just revert and remove flying. I'm just not a fan of making a griffin that doesn't naturally fly...
One more take at combining Raise Dead with Teremko Griffin. For reasons mentioned on Headcarving, I really want to make these card spells, and not creatures. That being said, turning the Raise Dead variant into a Gravedigger variant is probably no big deal. It happens all the time, and it stopped me from making bad banding mechanics in black.
I rather like that activated ability. In theory, it's probably white or green... but piling creatures on an already blocked creature seems kind of black, too. I know that activated abilities that influence combat isn't common anymore, but at 6cc, and with an ability that probably won't come up too often, I think we're fine.
This is one half of Rise // Fall, for what it's worth. I'd say the Meat Shield version is less out-of-flavour than the current one.
I'm probably going to revisit this tonight. It bothers me how much you have to squint to see that Teremko Griffin in there. It doesn't help that, by the time I flipped the flavor text on end, it ended up coming from Ravnica of all places. Thinking... thinking...
Do people think that Simulacrum tricks are inappropriate for black nowadays, no matter the flavor? I mean, what if the card looked more like this?:
Meat Shield

Instant
Return target creature from your graveyard to your hand. Prevent the next X damage to yourself, where X is equal to the returned creature's toughness.
Hole filling, I chose Raise Dead and random generator gave me Teremko Griffin. I tried to give the feel of a Raise Dead that was simultaneously granting flying (returning to your hand), while invoking a feeling of banding (returning two creatures). I may be off base. That wasn't a simple combination.
Originally, I made returning the creature to your hand an additional cost, and at instant speed, but it read really weird. I could hear some people say "Why is this worse than Raise Dead? While others would declare that Rescueing creatures wasn't really black. So I... well... you can figure out the rest.
