So, Cleave is just a worse version of trample?

Well, usually it's worse. Not always, I suppose.

This can trample 1 through to the opponent even if they have a bunch of 0/8 walls.

on 20 Apr 2012 by Mollusk:

If cleave is (usually) the power of the creature, then it's closer to "blocking this doesn't work" than trample.

Cleave isn't always the same as the creature's power. Mollusk is right, it was designed to be like blocking is less effective.

Hmm. Doesn't work with Giant Growth. Is this bad? I would think that if Cleave really existed, we'd see an evolution like this:

  • Cleave is revealed. People like it and play with it.
  • New Cleave is revealed, which is kind of like a Double Strikish sort of event. Nobody likes old Cleave anymore. People poll Original Cleave poorly in the godbook.
  • Magic 2017 comes out. Cleave is replaced in the core set with New Cleave, like Hexproof has blanked Shroud.

I find it interesting. It's quite possible that you would want to see this evolution in action. It's also possible you'd want to skip straight to newcleave. I could see both arguments.

  • The "official" (for the set) cleave cards can be seen at Community Set Chavest Summary, if you're interested.

I knew I had seen Cleave somewhere before.

Hey, this was afflict, 5 years earlier!
