Creature – Not a Beast
Create a new creature type for Magic the Gathering. You may either use a creature that Magic has yet to employ, one they've shuffled into another creature type, or one you created from scratch, but has a flavorful element that ties them together. Create three creatures with this type.

The "One they've used and shuffled into another creature type" is harder to spot nowadays. It used to be that Harpies and Boars were both beasts... but now, even Chambered Nautilus is a Nautilus Beast... and it's the only Nautilus out there. Still, if you can find a niche, kudos to you.

Most of our challenges have been asking for 2 cards, but this one seemed more appropriate for 3 cards to be designed. I'm assuming that one of the creatures will end up being rather vanillaish, so this gives us the space to "throw one away" for flavor, so that they can make two more interesting creatures.

There's still a few nicely iconic ones. "Witch" perhaps. They all seem to actually be wizards or spellshapers.

Mmm. My big beef is "Warrior". It keeps sucking up a bunch of other creature classes. Ever since they've added it, they've retconned the majority of sentient creatures in red to be warriors. Do Goblin Spelunkers look like warriors to you? Orcish Cannoneers? Goblin General?

Ok, I change my vote from "Witch" to "Spelunker".

Mainly so that I can have a "Wizard Spelunker" that is, in some way, the opposite of a spellshaper.

(Still, nothing beats creature type: "And his amazing cannon hat")

Don't just steal a good idea without using it. If you're going to claim an idea, design some cards to go with it :P

Goblin General should be creature type Lord or Noble. I don't know why they've ditched that type, but it's sorely needed. Orcish Cannoneers should clearly be Soldiers though. Red has occasionally got Soldiers, and I agree Creative are overly liberal with the Warrior type.

Amongst the types I've already given this treatment to in sets on Multiverse:
Aviator 1 2 3 4
Noble 1 2 3 4
Policeman 1 2 3 4
Zeppelin 1 2 3 4

(Hm, actually these are all Clockwork Wings. It seems I didn't invent any creature types in Sienira's Facets. How remiss of me :P)

I didn't for strike the earth, either. And I do intend to try and put up some witches; but all my ideas have been insufficiently interestingly different from wizards so far.

The type I most wanted to do here was Merchant, but it looks like wolfer's already covered that ground in Concord quite extensively. I think Magic could use quite a few more "noncombatant" class types. I'll see what other ideas I can come up with.

I've created a couple for my set already. Here is a sampling:

Ood: 1 2 3

Cyberman: 1 2 3

Dalek: 1 2 3

Auton: 1 2 3

Time-Lord: 1 2 3

Yeah - it's funny how Magic has never included Ood or Cybermen before, isn't it? :P

Ok, Witches. Flavourfully and thematically they like to take small things and make them useful. Circe makes big warriors wish they hadn't mocked your sheep, Glenda makes everything modular so it can take revenge, and Mayrant Schooner just blatantly likes the little darlings.

Possibly my worst challenge entry, and that's saying something.

Hippocamps! You know... like this Wikipedia article on Hippocamps.

They've appeared on a number of cards with old artwork, such as Vodalian Knights, but I'm pretty sure there hasn't been a Hippocamp as an attacking creature yet. I assume that any set that sported Hippocamps has a lot of water in it. In this mock set I'm making up, White Plains are underwater, so Hippocamps can appear in White and Blue.

The theme behind hippocamps is that they give a bonus to a creature attacking or blocking with them. Really, that could be a Horse tribe mechanic, but oddly, most Horses in Magic don't do that. I also added an extra creature, because Hippocamp Aerialist is too close to a real Magic card to feel like a new submission. See also: Hippocamp Skirmisher, Hippocamp Charger and Hippocamp Nightmare.

Bringing back tribal, after a fashion, I guess.

Sky Whisperer
Otherworldly Shaman
Goblin Caller

To quote Vitenka: "Possibly my worst challenge entry, and that's saying something."

EDIT: Oh, I forgot about that Oracle of Shadows fiasco. Second-worst, then.

Also for Challenge # 073, I made Phyrexian Scavenger, Phyrexian Swarmleader and Poisoned Peddler with two new creature types each.
