Yet Another Red Sphinx
For Challenge # 154. The punisher mechanic feels custom built for Sphinxes...
Cute. I wonder if this could still just give +3/+3. You know, as in looking at the current power/toughness of the creature and making a creature with p/t three greater.
Hahha!
I think this might feel different enough if there was some sort of delay... like it takes time for the venom to really hit. Maybe if this put a counter on the creature that said "At the beginning of the end step of this creature's controller, remove this counter and deal 4 damage to the creature this counter was on."
That's oddly more wordy than I imagined. It also gives rules baggage to counters, which I'm all for, but Wizards hasn't really done yet.
I was not expecting a giant to literally be grown.

Lightning Bolt with "lightning from god" flavour.
This card reminds me of the film She Creature.
Sting is an interesting concept and certainly feels very red. Having red's drawback of needing to overcome certain values is nice, but I can see where you find it to be too deathtouchy.
I think scaling sting, particularly on large creatures could actually be pretty interesting.
Yep, that's definitely a red ability that feels sphinxy. I just wonder if exiling what I assume is typically 4 cards and only being able to play one sounds kind of feel bad.

Merfolk in red.

Scorpion and deathtouch in red. In fact, it's too death-touch-y, I wish I could separate them a bit more.
(Sting will usually be fixed at a single value, but maybe changed in different sets or for some cards.)

Creature types were simply the easiest to use for examples. I guess a non-creature example would be a Sign in Blood type spell flavored as hope. The green creature with flying example, I'm not sure on what you mean. Do you mean to put flying in a green, or just show the green of something that normally is associated with flying? Gerard Capashen as black is more in line with what I was thinking, and sounds reminiscent of the alternate versions of legendary creatures from Planar Chaos.
FWIW, I read it as "keep colour philosophy the same", "keep colour mechanic identity the same", but find a concept used in one colour which could also be used in another colour. Eg. design a green bird without filling green with too many fliers (um, probably impossible, but maybe?)
I'm always big on flavorshifts Sorrow, so I'm onboard. Your examples, however, are all based on creature types. I presume this challenge is intended to be open-ended, though? For example, if a person wanted to represent what a green flying creature might look like, that would be fair game? Or perhaps what Gerrard, Capashen would be like if he were Black?
That is we're not looking for Repentant Vampire, but a traditional vampire defined in green or white. Dragons love hoards (artifacts) and fly, sounds blue. Zombies, why not green for such mindless, hungry undead?
Upped cost due to dude's comment
It was
. At
and ETB tapped... it's still very very good. Especially if you have access to other non-basic forests. But it's not an out and out better-than-every-manaramp-ever. For example, it's now sightly worse than Sol Ring. Yeah; it's still eye-poppingly good. But hey, some cards get to be. I'd be surprised to see this printed; but not "Ban this, right now" surprised.
Anyway; nice use of the other side; if you must have one :)
I do think this should be CMC 3, especially since you'd only play it in heavy green decks anyway
Votenka's comments made me realized I forgot to have this enter tapped
Huh. It's better than Kodama's Reach in two ways (cheaper, and you get the forest untapped). Worse in one, because you can't use it for two non-forest lands; but it's still really good mana ramp at 2. Obsoletes Gaea's Bounty in two ways, Ranger's Path... no still obsoletes that in one way. Wow. Instant "Play four of" in every deck I make.
Like the "Artificial forest" being a non-basic forest, too.
