Hmm. The comparison to Temporal Aperture invites one to notice that this doesn't shuffle. So you can Brainstorm or Top a particularly tasty card to the, ah, top. But even then you've paid at least 11 mana, and need to have found one of your expensive win conditions. Is it that strong to get Emrakul, the Aeons Torn on turn 6...? I mean, yes, of course it is, but Polymorph decks were just an outside player when Emrakul was in Standard.
Or is it the way that this doesn't say "an exiled card you own"? You can nick the card off an opponent's Chrome Mox or Isochron Scepter, both nerfing their artifact and getting a free spell yourself. If they're playing Legacy and have cast Force of Will or Demonic Consultation, so much the better. That seems more "cute" than "broken" though, since again, you're paying 10 mana for it...
Is this meant as a one-sided Evacuation? You can certainly cast this in end-of-combat or second main to avoid suffering from the +3/+0 penalty. But the return wouldn't actually do anything, because none of your opponents' creatures dealt combat damage "to an opponent". Should it be "to a player"?
Actually, you know what, let's be really evil and make it white. Waves of Aggression shows white can get this effect too, right?
move to white and reconcept
The more I think about this challenge, the more I enjoy it. So thank you Jack. I've added Make Your Own Luck and Reckless Ninjitsu for general mollification.
For Challenge # 052. Evil Maro sez: "For a slightly more restrictive cost than Trumpet Blast, players push one more damage per creature on their opponents. This comes with a drawback, however... creatures that pushed their Ninjitsu and hurt a 'master' in the process will find themselves punished and returned to their opponents hands. Sometimes, though, that's just where a Ninja wants to be! To strike from the shadows once more! In an emergency, you could always play this during your opponent's turn to return their creatures... but why would you be willing to take all that damage?"
For Challenge # 052 Evil Maro sez: "It's more expensive than Temporal Aperture, which was a fan favorite. But in exchange for the extra cost, you have the option to hold cards flipped in the exile zone and potentially play them later. For example, if you flip a Cancel, you could use it later by activating 'Make Your Own Luck' later, and you'd still get to exile another card! Sure, it's pricey compared to the Aperture, but we're sure players will find many uses for this card."
All I know, is that I'd play this card in some decks without needing to snag a free creature. It certainly beat Book Burning.
Created Warcaller, imagining it had been printed two years ago. Will consider some more possibilities soon.
Created for Challenge # 052. It's just Relentless Assault split across two payments; what harm could that possibly cause? Probably could even be uncommon, right?
If this had been printed two years ago, it probably wouldn't actually even need the "untap target creature" part to be format-warping.
Hmm. Turbo-dredge? Insta-Threshold?
Added Wolf Call, cause I felt this challenge could use a bit more loving. There sure are a lot of ways to exploit this game... ;)
For Challenge # 052. Oh, Evil Maro, you're so evil!
Haha. Yes, Zuberas or Wood Elves are indeed a little too good with this one (although frankly I'm glad to see something make good use of Zuberas). Excellent submission for the terms of the challenge - nicely done! ;)
I didn't even think about the fact that you could de-animate this and make an infinite loop. That's why I made it noncreature permanent in the first place, so that it wouldn't loop infinitely with two of them.
Um. Did faceless butcher previously omit the "Other than" wording? Oh wait, right, it can exile another faceless butcher, because it actually means ~this~. Gah.
Anyway. This seems to me to not be a "Unexpectedly format defining" card, but rather "This card is just blatantly broken as printed" At least have it say "on another creature" so that you need two of it to go infinite.
Unsportsmanlike or no, it still wins matches. There was an older trick with 3x Faceless Butchers. Play three in succession with no other creatures in the game, and the game loops indefinitely. It was a rare, but mean trick to play against Psychatog players after winning the first game. Why would they bother to counter your stupid Butchers?
I'm not saying we should aim to design that way, or that players should play decks with cards that take advantage of the rules... but the challenge was to design a card that breaks due to unexpected reasons, and, presumably, give a Spike a major advantage.
I created a counterpart: Petrifying Licid.
@jmg That's not broken, that's just unsportsmanlike.
Heh, with Scornful Egotist. Unfortunately, there are no 8 casting cost Wizards... but the Egotist is a Human now, so feel free to snag a Gigantomancer.
The thing I was thinking of when I made this was Ember-Fist Zubera and family. Pack your deck with 25 Zubera, chump block until you get this enchantment on the table, then start piling zuberas in your graveyard.
Mostly, when I thought of that, I assumed that there must be something even more borken, and commonly used than that, and figured the card was on the right track. If you want to play the card 'fair', Elf-ball seems full of cards you can abuse this with. Especially ridiculous when you consider how this works with Wood Elves... It's like getting 3 forests into play for free.
Priest of Urabrask/Coal Stoker also seems like a healthy start. I do like Bogardan Hellkite at the top of the curve. I don't know if this card is easier to work around than Dragonstorm, but it might be. If you wanted to stop at the Titans, however, then let Sun Titan pick up some more things to sacrifice while you're at it, I'd understand.
Really, though, the Blazing Effigy style cards seem ideal. Cards that love to see lots of creatures go to the graveyard, like Blood Artist, should be happy too. Combine with Second Sunrise or Patriarch's Bidding.
Oh, and if you just want to sacrifice the same creature over and over again, feel free to use something like Guile. Since Guile will keep shuffling when it goes to your graveyard, you know have something like "
: Hexproof" which will keep triggering Blood Artist. You don't even need two Guiles for that... one will do.
