For Challenge # 053 as a mash-up of Kemuri-Onna and Shatter.
This mash-up couldn't avoid being very close to Yuki-Onna given the ingredients, but I decided I could stick with my original idea of a sorcery or instant that returned to hand, rather than submitting another reprint :)
I changed "spirit or arcane" to "spirit" so the flavour works and its not tied to Kamigawa block.
I quite like the idea of a shatter than comes back to hand because it's obviously very useful if your opponent has multiple artifacts, but not broken because you can't guarantee a return, nor guarantee a target.
I wasn't sure about the cost. Wizards gave in and made Smelt as a strict upgrade on Shatter. This would probably be fine at a range of costs, but I decided it should be R sorcery speed so it wasn't compared directly with either.
I added a cost to the return ability from Rosewater's philosophy that you should normally have to invest in effects you want and decide if they're worth it.
But it's a shame you can't cast it multiple times if you have multiple spirits on the stack. That's probably not too likely. But maybe it should be 1R instant with no cost to recur, even if that's strictly better than shatter?
A reprint of Adaptive Automaton for Challenge # 053 as a mash-up of Proteus Machine and Crusade.
OK, submitting a reprint is bizarre, but adaptive automaton really is what you get if you slap those together and file the morph off, so there you go!
For Challenge # 053. A mash-up of Demonic Torment and Rabid Wombat
I went back and forth between "demonic wombat" and "tormented wombat". "Rabid demon" didn't seem appropriate :)
Again, this is more of a concept mash-up than a details mash-up. From demonic torment it gets (a.) +2, (b.) defender (c.) zero power (d.) 3 CMC. From wombat it gets (a.) 0/1 (b.) green, and (c.) a big sign saying "put auras on this" :)
I wonder what auras would be best -- it's a showcase for flag-type auras that affect all your other creatures, or give it a big tap effect.
For Challenge # 053. A mash-up of Brilliant Ultimatum and Ravenous Rats.
I strive to make mash-ups seem like an intermediate point, rather than an agglutination of all aspects of both cards. Which is hard. This doesn't have anything from the rats except "discard a card at sorcery speed".
But I really like that it seems to capture the flavour of a discard-based brilliant ultimatum with simpler rules, not more complex ones :)
OK, to get the ball rolling I created (((Shattertooth Rats))), (((Gorilla Crusade))), (((Demonic Machine))), (((Brilliant Spirit))) & (((Thundering Wombat))).
