For Challenge # 051. Well... why not?
For Challenge # 051. I thought about saying "one white aura, one blue aura and one black aura" or "Three auras of different colors", but really, this card is all about getting the perfect three auras combined into one creature. I probably shouldn't make it any harder than that.
I find it funny... I feel like I could have (and perhaps should have) just cost this card at
.
Big. No protection, though. It's cards like this that make me wish Shroud and Hexproof could be any color. I guess that would make those cards lose specialness, though...
It is probably overcosted, but I get the feeling it gets the job done. That is, if the job is "My opponent refuses to attack for two rounds, then when this goes to the graveyard, I return it to play and/or remove the counters from this card with a trick."
Bogstalker
Challenge # 051
Very interesting. Reminds me of Aboroth. You get one attack for 4 and one for 2, which makes me think at first that this is /over/costed... But I guess it's similar to Ball Lightning, and 2BB is similar to RRR...
doh; forgot the rarity
So; never done cards like this before - so I mashed a couple.
Juniper, Llanowar ArchDruid and Phyrexian Dabbler.
For Challenge # 051
So, let's mash the second part of the challenge. (CMC + 2 = P = T) meets Phyrexian Debaser
Ok, sacrifice to hurt something, grizzlybear, CMC4.
So - in one direction; if I made this 6/6 for CMC4, how nasty a disadvantage would it need to have? And in the other, can I make it free to cast? How terrible would it need to be then?
A 6/6 and -2/-2 How about the clockwork disadvantage? It's worse than vanishing3. What amount of a discount is that worth? You can have a 3/3 that copies itself, a 2/3 flier that gains life... a 3/1 that becomes a 6/1 with shroud. Yes, it does look like you get a serious amount of power for it. Ok, let's try it. "Gets two -1/-1 counters when it attacks or blocks"? "Gets a -1/-1 counter in each upkeep"?
The latter sounds more black - use it or lose it STOMPY.
actually make it 2/2 as I said I would
For Challenge # 051. Since I've never done any of this; I decided to mash. So: (CMC = P+4 = T+4) meets ... Llanowar Druid
Cool. Untapping lands is very strong, so this may be doable. My first thought is a 1/1 for gg3 with 'tap: untap all forests' Bear umbra and Nature's Will, indeed, suggest this is plausibly costed. Rude Awakening is the same cost for a one-off of it; but it's also got a more flexible option. All the rest need a combat tap; not just a plain old tap. That difference is worth worrying about... Patron of the Orochi suggests I need the rider; but that this creature could be allowed to be bigger. Woodland Guidance is a cheaper one-off that has a risk.
So ok; I think this is printable as is. It's a "We have to be VERY careful before we add this to the set" banner card... but I think it's about the right cost.
For the challenge, I'll make it 2/2 - for the mash I think I'd rather it be 1/2.
I think, to avert fears of "OMG THIS IS DOOOOM!" I'll make it a 2/2 for 6, rather than a 1/1 for 5.
I think this is better as a large-art card with a stark piece of rules text; rather than putting flavourtext on it. That's my excuse, and I'm sticking to it.
This is sortof a "development" challenge, in that development are the ones who generally tweak a creature's numbers up and down. But it's asking you to find a finely calibrated level of drawback or ability, which feels like a design question, to me at least...
I want the effective P/T here, BTW, not the printed. You don't get to cheat doing things like Triskelion or Tetravus.
Some examples from Magic's history:
5-mana 1/1: Beguiler of Wills, Creepy Doll, Phytohydra
6-mana 2/2: Abyssal Horror, Deepchannel Mentor, Goretusk Firebeast
1-mana 3/3: Rogue Elephant, Slumbering Dragon
2-mana 4/4: Flesh Reaver, Imaginary Pet, Jötun Grunt
3-mana 5/5: Phyrexian Negator, Dormant Gomazoa
While I can not solve the Proliferate problems, I did figure out how to solve the "Cast one. Don't care if my creatures get killed. Wait 5 rounds. Cast another, then win next turn." problem by making the beacon Legendary, and having them smash into each other. It's flavored for Legendary anyway.
Dragonweaver
Next: [Izzet Steam Gun]
Also, here's a joke:
How many Izzet scientists does it take to change a lightbulb?
It depends on what you want to change it into.
Created for Challenge # 049.
Fair enough; it's probably hard enough to do and vulnerable enough to not be utterly horrible then. I do like that the beacon is a glimmer of hope (token) too.
This is certainly great with Doubling Season, but it's also pretty good with Proliferate. Let's see... say I cast this on turn 7, after casting Plaguemaw Beast and Contagion Engine on turns 5 and 6. And Mothdust Changeling, Amoeboid Changeling and Mirror Entity on turns 1-3.
Upkeep... actually, you can't win the turn after you cast it, because the check for 5 counters is in the same atomic action as gaining the first, and proliferate doesn't help when there are zero counters. So I have to let one go on. But then it's easy to triple-proliferate in any number of ways to get counters 2-4 that round, and then next upkeep the fifth counter arrives, perhaps after a Shields of Velis Vel in response.
Eh, it's probably not good enough to break anything. It might be an amusing rogue Modern deck from time to time.
Well, to be fair, Doubling Season + A lot of things = Win. Even then, you're really looking at two less rounds, and a few less Survivors that need protection.
