commonality
For Challenge # 053 I decided to go completely random and rolled dice to get the pairings. So. Rabid Wombat + Gorilla Berserkers
Clearly we have a green creature. goodness, wombat is a legit creature type. Ok; they both are x/x+1 and have something giving +2/+2. For the wombat, it's "Equip me!" and for the ape it's "Block me!"
Vigilance, trample, and "must be double blocked"... kinda overpowering.
I think the nicest way to go here it to combine the enchantments bit and the cannot block bit. And while we're at it; give a bit of explanation as to why that wombat was so rabid in the first place.
Mashups are my thing, so I decided to make a bit harder on myself. I mashed up combinations of three cards, chosen at random, and leading myself to Guerrilla Revolutionaries, Cantankerous Protoplasm and Strategies Undone. Since I had some one bonus card, I made a Planeswalker out of it, in the form of Sakura Kemuri.
Not quite for Challenge # 053. I had one card left over, and I kept wanting to turn the triples in Planeswalkers, but held my hand, so, for the bonus card, I just turned Kemuri-Onna into a Planeswalker of sorts. I know that Ultimate doesn't look like much of an Ultimate... but I'm pretty sure it isn't very fair. Maybe the card should cost a little more? I don't know.
For Challenge # 053, composed of Brilliant Ultimatum, Thundering Giant and Ravenous Rats.
For Challenge # 053. This triple contains Proteus Machine, Shatter and Rabid Wombat.
Morph sure does have a lot of moving parts, eh? In case it isn't obvious at first glance, the whole point behind 'Agenda' is that creatures with it are supposed to 'go off' when something happens. My intent was for them to only trigger when they die, or maybe a few could do something when they return to hand or get exiled. I suppose it could work like a trap, though... 3 creatures attacked! I flip up this Agenda creature!
Originally, I had the keyword as "Engage" and it was specifically linked to "Whenever an Engaged creature is enchanted, flip it face up." I like that idea, too, but Shatter lead me down the path of wanting my own creature to destroy itself.
The creature, originally, was also a 3/4 for
, so if you had the mana available, you could just skip the surprise and upgrade to a mildly bigger creature. It felt like a distraction from the mechanics, though, so I pulled back to Proteus Machine standards.
For Challenge # 053, with parts from Demonic Torment, Gorilla Berserkers and Crusade. Granted, when you do a triple, you're going to leave stuff on the cutting room floor. I like these guys, though. In case you're wondering, part of the change from Gorillas to Guerrillas is because of Crusade. But part of it is because these guys are revolutionaries, and they don't want to hurt the citizens of the opposition forces... they're only interested in taking down the governing power.
Isn't funny how easy it is to make Rampage look good? It's almost as if Wizards designed Rampage the wrong way when they first printed it. ;)
Agreed. The first idea for a mashup is sometimes the best one, but not always. I find that when I back up and try a second or third time that those are the keepers.
I like this mechanic. I kind of wish it was only two cards, since three cards in the late game is close to "Target player discards the rest of their hand" and there isn't that much stress left in this card. That being said, you started with Brilliant Ultimatum, and the feel of Ultimatum needs to stay in the card. I get that.
Here, Here! If this combination popped up in Mashup: the Gathering, I would hope that I had the foresight to see this combination. I regret, though, that I probably would not. Good job.
@Alex: Thank you! Oops, I knew I forgot something, but didn't realise I left out the only text that actually made the card do anything :)
Hm. The flavour would work better if it was a R instant that only hit non-creature artifacts, but then it's much much less useful. I think I'll leave it as is for now, though 1R instant would also be good.
Added non-trivial rules text
Thank you for the name! Yes, it just sprang to mind fully-formed when I looked at the mechanics, but now I really like it: the card would seem completely random if you just stapled a spirit trigger to a shatter spell (cough kamigawa :)), but when I realised that, I realised the flavour completely justified the card, which is a rare treat for a mash up :)
Edit: Although I hadn't realised Yuki-Onna was a figure of japanese mythology? She seems to be associated with snow and wind, which is sort of shattery, but wikipedia doesn't give a more direct connection. But if it works for people who know her, then I apologise for doubting wizards. Either way, thank you to wizards for introducing me to the mythology :)
I like it as-is. Maybe in a spirit-themed storm deck?
I was musing on submitting Yuki-Onna too :)
I, um, have a feeling this card is missing some text though... ;)
There have been a couple of better-than-Shatters before: Shattering Pulse, Smash to Smithereens. Wizards also agree you can get a
sorcery Shatter with upside - Shattering Spree.
The name is excellent.
And from me:
Ravenous Ultimatum Demonic Wombat Poltergeist Activity Berserk Giants
and rather cheatingly, also:
Adaptive Automaton
For Challenge # 053, a mash-up of Gorilla Berserkers and Thundering Giant.
The symmetric RR and GG mana costs made me sure this should be a big
creature. Or it equally well be hybrid, since both colours could get both of these effects, but I decided that was just my game-designer-ness getting too cute: because it CAN be hybrid doesn't mean it absolutely has to be, even though it's rare to find interesting effects which can be hybrid.
I took an average of the stats, giving 3/3, and both keyword abilities. I then looked at gorilla berserkers, and it basically says "don't block me, and if you do, you're screwed", but I decided that +4/+4 (the minimum bonus) plus trample was sufficient incentive not to block, and decided it didn't need to be in the rules text :)
I don't know how good this is -- I think "good, but not gamebreaking". Haste plus evasion plus three damage a turn is pretty good, but it's still only a 3/3 for five mana. And it's AWESOME if they block it, but it's no better than an evasion ability.
Well, unless you put lure on it. That would be nice :)
