Wacky. Weird. Feels pretty blue (the illusion ability) and white (mass enchantment removal), but doesn't feel very Azorius. (Apart from that Azorius in Dissension had quite a theme of attacking with medium-sized cheapish flyers.) So I guess that makes it a success.
Yeah. The reality is that Wizards printed a lot of cards in the Ravnica blocks that kinda work against their guilds' strategies. Perhaps answers to this challenge would ideally be distanced from all such cards as well, but that's an extra level of difficulty even beyond how hard the challenge is turning out to be.
Mm... I know. I just wanted the card to do something. I'm going to have to come back and take another stab at this idea... probably by doing something completely different. I probably have to infuse a lot of flavor...
Now it beats Godhead of Awe and the few effects that are like that, but not Sudden Spoiling (since you can't use the ability out from under that), Mutilate (or even non-lethal variations like Nausea), and -1/-1 counters. By being constrained to layer 7b, the rules really don't want effects like what this is trying to be, to work as advertised.
That's pretty good. I couldn't think of anything for Rakdos, it seems really hard to make B/R not hedonistic and wanton and cruel.
Ways this is anti-Rakdos:
Although I think the demon flavour (even though it's a deal which is kept, rather than one which is twisted and beytrayed), and the general spikey-ness of it, would still fit Rakdos.
Although I'm not sure, tutoring always feels like spike to me, but maybe it's actually more johnny.
I'm not sure if it's possible to make a non-griefer Timmy R/B card...
Yeah. I went to lunch, and realized I hadn't really done anything here. I changed it to an activated ability instead, so we can at least say it does something.
That ability doesn't really do anything. Even if you make Quicksilver Gargantuan into a copy of it, the copy just ignores the ability and stays 7/7.
The only case I can find where it's relevant has nothing to do with the "3/3" part of the ability, but rather with the "creature" part. Specifically, since it says nothing about "in addition to its other types", if you have a preexisting Mycosynth Lattice or Enchanted Evening and then drop this, the Statue will not be an artifact or enchantment, respectively. (If either of those cards postdates the creature, it will win out and paste its type onto this.) Cytoshape and licids also act weird around this, but then again they act weird around everything.
Layers and timestamps. (I'm not sure how they work, but they must be relevant.)
Wizardbane Wanderer
For Challenge # 066. As soon as I thought of 'Exalted' for anti-Boros, I felt like I was cheating. Red and White have both featured 'loner' themes in previous sets. Exalted isn't really that far off in red, either... cards like Voracious Dragon do a fine job showing large red creatures supported by the rabble that stands behind the lines, cheering them on. That flies right in the face of Battalion.
Oblique Statue
For Challenge # 066. Simic loves creatures. It loves them to death. It wants to do all kinds of freaky things with creatures.
I opted for a different kind of blue/green, where green is using life magic to turn blue inanimate objects into perfect, unchanging creations. Originally this card had "power and toughness cannot be changed, permanents cannot be attached to it, and tokens cannot be added to it" but that was too heavy a hand. I like this, though. No matter how you try to twist this card, it keeps telling you it's a perfect 3/3 creature. I'm not sure if that's how the rules work, however.
Deal with Devils
For Challenge # 066. Sure, sure. Rakdos is fast, and this card isn't. More importantly, is that most Rakdos cards seem to be about throwing away resources, while this card is gathering resources, without drawback, in a very red-black way. Reintroducing an old keyword doesn't hurt.
That seems legit. Maybe the key to this challenge is looking at the flavor itself, as opposed to the mechanical flavor. This doesn't look very Izzet (Though, neither does Glass Golem for a similar reason.)
Having not looked at the rest of the cards yet, I think Jack is doing a good job proving how difficult the challenge is. He's right... this is anti-Boros. And Link's right. Boros made a number of anti-Boros cards (Blockbuster anyone?). If we get too strict with our definition of not-a-guild, there may be no cards to design. I don't know. I'm going to look at the other ones.
Leaping Spider
For Challenge # 066
This seems to have G/W written all over it. Green does flash. White does flash. Green does p/T, white does p/T. Green does simple creature-combat tricks. White does simple creature-combat tricks. Green can block fliers. White can block fliers.
I think it's non-Selesnya, but I'm not sure. I always think of Selesnya as a goody-two-shoes colours, that relies on pumping out lots of big, usually square statted creatures and relying on overall strength to win. The "ha ha, caught you" vibe is one both green and white do sometimes, but doesn't come out in Selesnya where they both show their straightforward fair selves.
I like it, but I'm not entirely happy with its anti-golgari-ness, but Gravecleanse.
(I also made Harmontrate but I think that was a mistake.)
