Oops, I did completely neglect to notice that the name and type really suggested this should have flying. I should have twigged that really!
"I guess they'll always meet in FRF, so maybe."
I assumed that playing together wasn't required, but was a plus, partly for fate reforged + dragons draft, partly for casual players who want to build a jeskai deck, and I just felt like doing that if I could.
"But it's very weak."
I really can't evaluate power level very well!
(And remember, if I forget to put flying on a bird, that's me screwing up the templating, not designing a cassowary :) Oops, sorry :( )
I figured, you could use this a lot more often than prowess, since prowess means hoarding your spells in hand to cast/threaten at the right moment, and potentially leaving mana open. Whereas with secret lore, you can attack and threaten to pump any of your creatures.
But, well, I'm often wrong power level :) Maybe it's just not worth it as a mechanic, it didn't seem that promising, I just really liked the idea :)
Forgot flying!
I don't think the alternate history mechanics need to actually play well with each other, do they? I guess they'll always meet in FRF, so maybe.
This does indeed feel nicely WU. But it's very weak. This would be a weak card if it cost just
; in most cases it'll be similar to Sanctuary Cat. I do quite like the idea of being able to use spent instants as "shield points" or something, but... Imagine a 3/1 with this. That's not going to be anywhere near as appealing as Bloodfire Expert.
And Jeskai Battlehawk
See Challenge # 121.
I looked for a UW mechanic flavoured as cunning that didn't feel out of place in W and played nicely with Prowess. I'm not completely convinced by this, but I like the idea.
It would need a shorter name. And I need to check if it's too similar to delve.
And I'm not sure if it needs a mana payment as well. I chose toughness-breathing as it's almost impossible for it to be broken if you have too much of it, and complicates combat calculations only half as much as pumping power. So it might be ok at instant speed without a mana requirement. But normally that's a bad idea.
I'm not sure if it conveys the flavour well enough, I imagine a smug monk knowing the secret lore that lets her dodge everything. But that's a bit of a complicated concept to convey. But I wanted something that felt W, and "knowledge" felt like a W sort of U thing, and toughness-breathing has WU written all over it, but hasn't fit any of the previous UW guilds.
Thanks!
I really wasn't sure how to evaluate it. Now it occurs to me, maybe it should be compared to "weak deathtouch on attack"?
Ooh. Looks like my colour auto-detection goes a bit strange here.
If you write the cost as
2B/RR
, then it makes this card gold. But if you put parens or braces around the symbols,{2
}{B/
R}{R
}
, it makes it hybrid. Personally I find the hybrid frame more intuitively applicable to semihybrid cards like this, though I wouldn't be surprised if Wizards came up with a new tweak on the frame again when they eventually do it.:)
Makes a lot of sense. This might be fractionally too aggressive, but might be fine.
And Sultai Graverobber, a loot-cycling variant to combo with delve.
See Challenge # 121.
Looking for a UB Sultai mechanic that coexists with delve. Hence, a loot-variant of cycling that fills your graveyard up.
I'm not sure where it should be costed (mana payment? draw then discard, or "reveal two, choose one") It should be slightly better than cycling, but noticeably less good than pure card-draw/filtering spells.
I wasn't sure if this was ok in black. I pondered using a life payment, but I eventually decided the graveyard-filling and card-finding made it close enough it might be ok for a clan mechanic even if black wouldn't usually get this. But there might be some improvements to find.
Added Order of Eladamri, then decided to do a little space fill with Shivan Catapulter and Volcano Spawn.
I just wanted to make a common vanilla, just for feelsies. Also thought it would be interesting to make a Red-Green creature with base red, since most designers naturally lean to the more powerful creature color, green. Anyhow, this card is part of Challenge # 118 and inspired by the world of Order of Eladamri.
Just filling in a few more cards to get a feel. See Challenge # 118 and Order of Eladamri.
For Challenge # 118. I wanted to take a different attack on Hybrid/Not Hyrbrid, so I went after color matters. It seems that one of the strengths of adding an 'inconsequential' hybrid symbol is that you 'accidentally' can sneak an extra color into the card.
Of course, normal hybrid works like that too. So the theme for a set like this has to be very different than what we saw in Shadowmoor. Instead, I tried to resurrect some Invasion flavor. The theme is that there are five colors that normally don't work together, but find that they must. So the colors are doing everything they can to support each other, but in their own narrow, color pie focused way. Order of Eladamri is a potential front runner in a 'green' deck that could be mono-white, or maybe white/red. Or it could be your usual solid support card in a Gw deck. Interesting choices for standard, and frustrating picks for limited.
I also turned on the color indicator, which is unnecessary. But I could see Wizards doing it in a set like this as a wink to players. You know, when I first started putting this together I thought to myself, "Well this is a cheezy way to solve the challenge." Now I kind of want to see this New Invasion set. Go figure.
Huh. Entangled charms. I'll have to remember that whenever I get around to making an expansion for New Mirrodin.
I wish there was an emoticon that inferred "I'm going to talk about your card, but by now you probably don't care much. Just pretend I'm a time traveler. A very slow time traveler."
Anyhow, this would have made a fine 2/3. With this cost, it's more of a green creature with potential red upgrade, anyway.
Finally had time to think about this and tried "rage" as a RG mechanic on Temur Furyfist.
See Challenge # 121.
I looked for a RG ability that would go well with ferocious but be in a different design space.
This is designed to play well by itself but also to incidentally help trigger ferocious ("if you control a creature with power 4 or greater") at least some of the time.
There have been lots of mechanics very similar to this, exalted, bushido, rampage, etc and many individual cards, but it still seems appropriate.
I'm not sure exactly how to cost it, I think this is about right but I'm not sure.
I assume it will always be "Rage 2" but I followed wizard's normal guidelines of putting a number there anyway so it can be tweaked for a few rares or for future sets.
So I found more design space in Bend than I anticipated and added a few more cards. Qarsi Diplomat, Marang Fever-Fiend Wealthless Heir, Kheru Corpsemonger, and Mirror of Pilfered Dreams for some cross-set synergy.
