Haha Epic! Just what I was hoping for on that flavor text :)

That's a long enough wait. We're threatening to drag this card out too much. Acting as tie-breaker, I chose Glimpse of Eternity, and added some flavor text.

See you guys in (((NTC #033)))!

I just bookmarked that page a few days ago! Super useful, if slightly dated.

I had it bookmarked earlier this year (along with over 100 other beloved bookmarks), but when I got my computer back, they uninstalled all my programs and removed my bookmarks. Hell, I even lost some downloads for no discernible reason. I guess the hard drive was just that corrupted.

TLDR; I agree and have done this

Oh, I just remembered what this reminded me of: Ancient Excavation. AE wants you to have a full hand first, whereas this wants your hand to be empty

It's a few years old now, but it's good to always have the Mechanical Color Pie document handy as reference

''These color rules are so meticulous''

I'll drink (water) to that. Cheers.

Okay I thought if it just had draw and discard in the same sentence then its called looting because of Faithless Looting. These color rules are so meticulous and I am so ignorant.

  • 2020-06-02 13:25:12: jmgariepy commented on Glimpse of Eternity

Drawing then discarding was experimented in red, which is why it pops up on the eight year old card Faithless looting. But it only really lasted a couple of years like that. At some point, Wizards came to their senses and realized that discarding before drawing felt a lot more like impulsive red, and also came with a surprising amount of untapped space.

Drawing, then discarding, has been a Blue mechanic since... Weatherlight? It's arguable, but Merfolk Traders seems to be the first card to do this cleanly in a color. The mechanic is often referred to as 'Looting' since Merfolk Looter was the poster child of the mechanic for so many years (Discarding, then drawing is sometimes referred to as 'rummaging' because of Rummaging Goblin, but it's a less commonly used term.)

Some examples of Looting in Standard: Erratic Visionary, Facet Reader, Prying Eyes

Some examples of Rummaging in Standard: Merchant of the Vale, Ox of Agonas, Heartwarming Redemption

Wait. Isn't drawing then discarding a {r} ability? Shouldn't this be red? Like Faithless Looting

Ooh! This is unexpected. Very cool idea, JM

I voted; I'll be honest; I voted for nearly all of them (lol). Most were really good. I skipped a few if I had any issues with them, even though there was maybe ONE (at most) that wouldn't be totally appropriate.

This has been one of the most interesting NTCs yet, IMO.

We're trying something new! I set up a poll with EasyPolls, so go there and vote on your favorite choice!

    Some notes:

  • Yes, you can vote on multiple different options. Go ham.
  • If the vote ends in a tie, I'll still be acting as official tiebreaker.
  • I might do a run off vote if multiple similar entries, when combined, would take first place. Though I doubt I would do that very often in the future since it slows down the whole process. But I figure it's a reasonable move for this poll since I doubt anybody expected me to turn this into a poll.

    Savant's Lament

Academics were like this. They'd know how to use so-and-so's theorem, but they'd forgotten how to do anything without so-and-so's theorem because they didn't need it any more.

Thank you! I was actually drawing inspiration from Glimpse the Unthinkable, which honestly, would probably fit just as good on this card as on it's actual card... Though, that's definitely arguable.

Hmmm... what about Psychic Restoration flavored as a telepath, probably Jace, repairing the mind of someone who had their mind destroyed? Maybe it's a flashback to Jace having healed another character after they fought Bolas, and when he repairs this person's mind (maybe he was surprised to realize what they had done when he delved into their mind, because they just appeared like a somewhat-talented warrior/cleric/etc), they re-ascend as a planeswalker, because after fighting bolas, their mind was so broken that their spark stopped functioning?

Might be funny to be like, "Okay sir, I'm almost done in there, just gotta restore your memories of the last year, oh-- wait a minute, what the hell were you doing fighting an Elder Dragon?!"

    guy planeswalks away

Flavor text: Jace was surprised that when he finished restoring the local shaman's mind, the elf planeswalked right in front of his eyes! or something similar :P

I was thinking Glimpse the Thinkable (not very seriously), Glimpse of Eternity does capture a good feeling.

    Forgotten Lessons

Could have somber flavor text about a character death, maybe.

    Whispers of Arcanis

That one character with no lore, one card and who is apparently super powerful? Arcanis the Omnipotent. Maybe if you'd prefer a known character, Whispers of Bolas could work, though he is far more centered in {b} than {u}.

Glimpse the Worldsoul is pretty cool

Or, if that seems too {g} (even though Worldsouls don't always have a color identity of {g}, IIRC): Glimpse of Eternity is also a good name, and would reference the blind eternities instead of worldsouls.

    Memory Sieve

  • 2020-05-29 02:49:24: jmgariepy commented on Glimpse of Eternity

I knew I didn't have that quite right, but I couldn't find the card to template around. Thank you Dude for reminding me that Kozilek exists.

But yeah 'Loot as much as you want' is clearly broken for two mana. That would guarantee your seven card, game winning combo to go off on round 3 every time. Heck, just putting the top 30 cards of your library into your graveyard is too powerful for two mana.
