Of course, my wording was "put one on top of your library" which is probably unnecessary and misleading. Removed that phrase, and left something that might cue people in better to what's going on.
Not a strict upgrade to Sleight of Hand, since you put the other card back on top. I think this may be why many players rate it higher than I do... they misread the card.
Seems a reasonable tweak on Sleight of Hand. I find it plausible that Wizards will obsolete Sleight of Hand at some point, so this seems a very reasonable way to do it.
Yep, that's a good name.
Heh. 5/5 unblockable for
would be somewhat plausible; like a blue Lava Axe :)
Yay, I do love Alexi's Cloak. It's very odd to see shroud not spelled out, although I suppooose I can see your reasoning.
This seems scary in Legacy Dredge. If you hit one, that lets you hit yourself for 4 more, perhaps a Narcomoeba and another one of this, which lets you hit yourself for 4 more...
Originally, this card was a hole-filler for a card that proved to be incapable of changing casting costs and too powerful at common. Being the only common mill card in the set, it was immediately adopted by milling affeciandos and others who just thought it was cool. Originally, this card milled 5... my reasoning was that it wasn't any better at Tome Scouring at common, and cost
more, with a tougher to activate trigger, so it should be fine. Then we had our first draft with it and learned something. People who pack 6 Tome Scours in a limited deck are stretching their deck to knock opponents out. People who play 6 Sky Pirates aren't doing much stretching. It's only a little worse than Wind Drake in the stats department. I had to cut back to 4 to calm this card down.
Oh, also, this card inspired the rest of the cycle of "goes to graveyard from anywhere" in 20XD6. We've been told for over a decade that dumping cards like Rukh Egg into the graveyard from our hand was too good an ability, so it's nice to see a group of cards say "Actually, no. It was just the Rukh Egg."
A lot of people liked this card. Too many, almost. I never got a chance to draft with the thing, because they'd always be snagged early.
It's good, but it isn't that good. But there's something about this card that reminds people of Ponder and Thoughtcast and makes them say "Holy Carp!" I suppose, I shouldn't worry too much about it. It's nice to see people fawning over your cards, no matter how you evaluate them. It's also nice to be able to play with your own toys, though. Since I will rarely value this card better than... let's say a body that can attack: The Cephalid Spellmerchant, it will never end up in my deck.
Help Wisdom, Hurts Hellbent, and packs it into an efficient body. Now that I'm not tied to the images I first matched these cards with, I'm free to change the creature type like to something that will make the card more tribal. Good news that will need to be applied later.
White, "the wisdom color", normally calls out a number of card in hand that it needs to hit. Most often, it's 5. Blue's the color that asks you to keep counting the number of cards in your hand. It seemed like the sort of thing that blue wizards would like, and has a sense of manipulation and control in all the bean counting. I tried not to go to overboard with this philosophy, though, since too much hand counting results in too many slow games.
By the by, I got lucky with that name. I can just imagine a wizard pointing this card at an opponent and yelling "Be Little!" It's like a double entendre that isn't.
I don't know if I can summon the strength to say anything good or bad about this card. It's just sort of there. It feels like a good card to me, for any set, even if it is an expensive trick compared to its brethren.
Okay, I suppose that's always bugged me. If we compare modern "change stats" card abilities to this card, this card would cost either
or
. Which seems fine, until you realize that you don't have very far that you can go. 1/1?
. 3/3?
. 4/4 with flying?
. Based on that scale, what type of common p/t change are we supposed to get when someone pays
? 8/8 Unblockable?
Weird. I've got a cycle of common flash auras in the set. I've mentioned before that flash works well for wisdom, since you don't have to play it immediately. You can wait for the perfect moment, and take advantage of an extra card in hand. Flash Auras also do another neat thing, in that they can take up slots normally reserved for combat tricks. RnD's recent policy has been to make sure that every color has one trick at common, which I am a big fan of. Drafts need a bit of spice... there should always be a possible in-color disaster waiting to happen.
But, um, no Shroud, huh? I had originally written this out as Shroud (it is in the Oracle wording after all). But we'll probably never see another card with Shroud again, since Hexproof is superior in a number of ways (including public reception). About a year ago, in league, I happened to get my hands on one of these puppies, and it was a blast. I almost never used it to enchant my own creature, almost always opting to kill a combat trick whenever I got it. This card would be one of the few cases where "Hexproof" would be much much worse...
Monday again, people! 7 new cards from Magic 20XX wheeling over to Blue.
Blue has an interesting role in the Wisdom v. Hellbent fight. It isn't invested in pushing toward one direction or the other... it's more interested in controlling the number of cards in your hand. To this end, sometimes it wants you to have more cards in your hand, sometimes less.
This is now an interesting comparison to Kor Skyfisher. I think the power level is pretty much spot-on now.
Scythe Tiger is a good point. I'm jumping this to 2/3. I'm no fan of making a card for Modern that is better than Kird Ape, but at least it probably wouldn't break anything.
