Random Generator gave me Consuming Ferocity and Atogatog. I needed a rare artifact to fill in one of the holes of the set... but a 5-color rare should do the trick, too. So let's do that.
I ain't got much to say on this one. Except for my continuing wonder at the base cards; both Consuming Ferocity and Atogatog look like they'd be fun to play with if they... you know... worked.
Whoops on the ambiguity. On an aside, I hate using 'his or her' when 'their' will do... but Magic uses 'his or her' for a reason. Tough habit to break.
I suppose there is only a very small handfull of Griefer Johnny/Timmies that would really appreciate the card. I don't like designing for such a small crowd, but every crowd needs some love, I guess.
Also, note to self: Create 'Elemental Master and Commander' wedge deck. That's just absurd.
Is this meant to be "Each player can't untap permanents except for one land during his or her next untap step"? The "their" is confusing; it looks like it could mean "During the next [one] untap step", except that'd be utterly horrible and there's no way it could mean that.
Anyway. I agree that the ways to work around it are enough effort that it shouldn't be too much of a problem. (Though Mikaeus, the Unhallowed is a pretty strong approach.) It is a "fair" card, and like many "fair" cards, the symmetry is eminently breakable for those who want to.
The question occurs, who is this aimed at? I suspect most tournament Spikes wouldn't see much point in making players skip every other turn. Johnnies can certainly make the effect happen more often, but why would they? I think in both cases it's most likely to appeal if the player also has a streak of griefer-Timmy.
(Also, in considering what Johnny might do with this, I hit on Cinderhaze Wretch + Elemental Mastery + Cathars' Crusade. Yowsers.)
Random Generator gave me Cinderhaze Wretch and Exhaustion. I needed a rare artifact, and, what do you know, Winter Orb is a classic artifact effect, so I used that...
...with a lot of trepidation. Winter Orb is also classically unfun, after all. That's the problem with using the random button on Gatherer. That said, I think this card is fine. Normally, it should mean "Players skip every other turn", and it comes with a number of outs. I wouldn't have put the untapping bit in their normally, but it wouldn't feel like a real mashup without it. Even then, with two -1/-1 counters, it will only work in combination with something else, and you got to work to make it inifinite. By the time you could add two +1/+1 counters to a creature each turn, you could probably win the game in a few turns anyway.
The big problem with card that I can see is multiples. I don't know. The card seems fair. I'm not sure if that makes it okay, though.
