The haste granting exploiter is Scary Manager in the skeleton.
@Comicalflop : This card is not in the skeleton. The card that is in the skeleton is Forge Eater, which is quite different from Manic vandal. Please refrain to comment on cards that are not in the skeleton.
Also, I don't believe that the art should dictate card design. Any steampunk/cowpunk art we might find on the internet wouldn't have anything to do with our flavor at best and would be disjointed and chaotic at worst. I highly doubt we'll find many, if any, artworks that are appropriate for the set.
You're abosolutely correct Alex, the majority of the cards in this file aren't going to be used (it varies from card to why, some it is because they are OP, others have wonky wording, and some are just meh) but they are left in the file to provide information and inspiration for the future.
The cards in the Skeleton are the ones currently "in" the set.
I assume they're not planning on putting all of them in the set, but rather are just collecting lots of options so they can choose the right 10 for the set. I'm very confident the DTK team will have designed a lot more than 10 Exploit cards.
That wording doesn't work. It would be impossible for that wording to work b/c the card requires you to pay a to cast if.
Since it needs to be pointed out again, this card isn't "in" the set. Check out the skeleton. It has the cards that are "in" the set. The rest of the cards in the file are ideas being bounced around.
While I'd personally prefer to have no art at all over forced Ill-fitting art, I don't see why we can't do both.
For example, we can write art descriptions and include art selections from the Internet. That way we would be able to give people the option for them to choose which they prefer.
I think we can get more creative than this. How about:
Enchant creature R: Enchanted creature gets +1/+0 until end of turn. 1C: Attach Steam Stoke to another target creature you control.
This card feels OP, even without the trash ability. It's not too hard to make this a cantripping 2 mana 2/1 at common. How about a functional reprint of Satyr Wayfinder? Seems more on theme with the Trash and graveyard interactions
"Whenever X winds up a creature" might make sensetous , but it's not really the proper wording for 'when you activate an ability, do X'. Luckily, herald of anafenza provides us the correct wording we need:
"Whenever you activate Steelbeast Mentor's windup ability, until your next turn, target creature can block as though it were untapped."
Instead of making the Trash effect be fighting another creature, why not simply make it be regenerating your creature?
If I'm reading this card correctly, it's a worse version of Cultivate; you NEED to have three nonland permanents in order to do the same thing Cultivate does? Yuck
Here's wording that makes the card not clunky:
Target creature deals no combat damage this turn. If only colorless mana was spent to cast Dense Mist, instead prevent all combat damage that would be dealt by creatures other than target creature this turn.
There are WAY too many cards with Exploit being designed here. Dragons of Tarkir only had 10 cards out of 264 with Exploit. The mechanic can be interesting but is being wayyyy too overdone. This card is not only undercosted but also completely identical to Outlaw Shooter and Sparkmage Chemist
this card is practically identical to Outlaw Shooter. I think there should be more Alchemists, especially since there's enough artwork to support it, maybe redesign the card with pressure counters?
This should have haste in some fashion. If it exploits itself, it's just Trumpet Blast. If it exploits a different creature, it loses out on giving itself +2/+0
Why can't this just be a reprint of Manic vandal? Same cost without having to sacrifice anything, and it looks like the current design is to slap Exploit on every creature in B/R
How is it possible to have an artifact creature - spirit? Either it's a physical machine or it's incorporeal, it can't be both
Magnetic Putty?
Just out of curiosity what would a Artifact ooze look like?
Hunt the Weak is fine.
I like the first one more, but the second could be considered for the activated ability slot (but probably not along side the green one).
I think a fight card is a good idea. Personally I'm not a fan of one-sided fight in green at least not at common. I think it's a pretty powerful ability they should get sparingly rather than all the time. Hunt the Weak I think would be fine tbh, though maybe we want a +1/+1 payoff card here rather than an another enabler?
ComicalFlop's got some great art and this time we'll actually be working with them so it's not completely mismatched. If not, then I'd greatly prefer not doing art descriptions. I get that it adds something, but what it also adds is tons and tons of reading to cards that already often have lots of words on them. Yes I know you can choose to ignore them, but I think players would find it much more difficult than you think to ignore a paragraph of text on every one of their cards. It looks pretty bad in actual practice.
