It could, but I'd hesitate to make it cost one in colorless.
Pioneer Researcher was originally a 1/1 for one that recharged. It played much like a turn one mana dork in constructed that was removal resistant since you can't stop the mana, but you can stop the body, which is the less relevant part of the card.
I'd rather it be a Thopter before one mana, and colored if one mana.
Or just cut it?
