Created for Challenge # 023 as part of a cycle around Broodhatch Nantuko.
This is a pretty cool card. I wonder if it should be rare, based on Cephalid Constable, but I suspect uncommon is fine because it'll normally only get one trigger, even if that is a Sea God's Revenge.
It's a shame, but does it need to be non-land? I'm not sure, you're right, it'll normally trigger once, but if you can just once chump a 6/6 with this, you're likely to wipe someone's board out entirely, which is possibly stronger than even the other effects in the cycle? Or am I just overcautious and that's normal for uncommon?
One interesting subtle side effect of non-land would be that it probably forces you to return your own stuff...
And, hmm, can't this always save itself? That'd get very old very fast.
Good point, it would have to say "up to", but that's probably a good idea anyway.
I think it's too late to save itself: damage happens, effect goes on stack, state-based effects kill it, effect resolves. But it would be good to avoid the potential confusion if possible.
Mm, yeah, it should definitely be "nonland".
It can't save itself unless it's had a toughness boost and is being dealt less than its toughness in damage. I'll add reminder text like Leyline Phantom though.
I wasn't sure about "up to", but might as well as well.
I'm hazy, but is the reminder text strictly correct? I can't recall whether SBA will happen between the damage being dealt and triggers going on the stack, or only after the triggers are on the stack.
Certainly, dead creatures will be unreturnable, but I can't remember if they'll be targetable.
It's correct as written. The ability will trigger while the creatures are alive, but only get put on the stack (which is when targets are chosen) once SBAs have happened.
This is way way too powerful. It's one thing that a low-drop can kill your big guy with Pharika's Chosen, but it's another that it punishes your entire board. And that would be without the surprise factor.
It's not that this card is bad, but it doesn't have to be that tight of a cycle, I guess, in the mana cost and morph cost.
As a solution, this could be closer to Fade Away. "...to their owners' hands, unless they pay
for each of those permanents."
That ain't the right wording, but you get the idea.
