2013-11-07 01:26:52: jmgariepy created the card Challenge # 100 Discussion

Challenge 100 will be here soon enough. Since 100 is a nice round number, I thought it would be best if we agreed on what the challenge should be among the community, though I do have a suggestion:

Since the first challenge was a mix and mashup using 10 cards, I figured we could do another mix and mashup, but this time go for the triple-mash. 10 cards from column A, mashed with one of ten cards from column B, mashed with one of ten cards from column C. Does that sound like a good plan? Or does someone else have a better idea?

That sounds pretty cool (though 5x5x5 may be enough, 30 cards is a lot of work).

I'd thought of something like a retrospective, "choose two design challenges at random, make a card that answers both of them". Though that could come at any time, it doesn't really need to be #100.

Or something else that is multiverse-meta. I want to say something like "find an abandoned card on multiverse, fix it up" or something, but it's not clear what would be abandoned.

"Choose two challenges and answer both of them" was Challenge # 073. It was indeed awesome, but it's been done.

A triple-mash sounds... reasonable. Not "hey that's awesome" exciting, but a fine challenge.

Doh! Thank you. I thought it had, but I couldn't find it on the list.

Another idea: how about something touring through lots of Multiverse's cardsets? E.g. Design two cards for a previously mentioned cardset, and then post a cardset that you'd like to see someone design a couple of cards for.

I like this idea. If we wanted something a bit more random, we could tell people to go to the front page of Mulitiverse, and choose the Nth number for the top, and get them to design X secret cards for that set. The original idea--Design then suggest the next set--is a fine choice as well. I think I prefer random because (well, because I'm me, but getting beyond that) that way we don't indirectly give people an excuse to read too far into the designer's choice for set. "They chose my set. So they think my idea is good, but my design is poor." Obviously, no. No one is saying that. But if the sets are chosen at random, then we can eliminate any hard feelings as to which sets are chosen.

Again, though, either way sounds like a good plan by me. I think I overthink stuff, and the way people react to things, anyway.

Also, triple mash is being shelved, but since it's not a bad idea, I'm putting it on the calendar. Let's call it Challenge 97.

On second thought, chains have a tendency to last longer, and there are a lot of sets on this site with 3 cards in them, and no real theme. Okay, ignore my previous argument. My vote goes for design for a set, then suggest the next set.

Or now I think about it, I don't know if it might be better to say "describe a set, the next person makes one or more cards for it", where the set may or may not be an existing one. Often it's hard to see what the original author was going for just by looking at the description, though I don't know if that's a problem.

It might also be right to say "design a card for one of the last three mentioned sets", or similar, since a set has a lot of potential design space?

I deliberately phrased my suggestion as design for "a previously mentioned cardset" because yes, I think people might like to have a go at a cardset that's already gone. Although TBH I imagine people would do that whether or not the challenge terms explicitly permit it :)

Oops, good point :)

I think we're due challenge # 100 now, or is there anything we need to wait for? I'm not sure who owns it: I think it's Alex's idea, but if you're too busy jmg or I could create it?

Done.
