For Challenge # 079
Maybe it should give a permanent boost and the sacrifice should only be for the narrow ability "damage can't be prevented". But I like the flavour of the interplay that a glass knife it doesn't do anything most of the time, but still shapes the story around the hero until it's finally used.
I'm not going to lie. I don't get it.
The Subtle Knife?
I'm sorry, I hadn't expected this to be confusing :(
I think lots of faerie tales have a bad guy who can only be killed with some special weapon. This is supposed to be one of those weapons, not a reference to any particular one.
In this case, the special property of the knife is that it can only be used once, which is something I've read occasionally. (Maybe it would be simpler if it just gave deathtouch?)
I feel like the Subtle Knife would be "Whenever equipped creature attacks, you may planeswalk."
I think an infinitely sharp blade like the Subtle Knife would have the "damage can't be prevented" clause. Maybe even Staying Power for damage it deals.
Ooh... Staying Power for damage is pretty cool. You could only really use that one one rare or mythic spell (and it would help if the spell self-exiled), but I like how it's both better and worse than -1/-1 counters.
