For Challenge # 040. I wanted to get at least one 'real' Magic plane out there, so I put Icatia on the map. There's a bit too much stuff going on on the card, I admit, so if anyone wants to help pare down what's on the card, I'm open to suggestions. As a quick breakdown:

  • The artwork is from Icatian Town. I would have preferred the artwork from Icatian Store (Original Fallen Empires version... not the fifth edition version which probably just auto-carded), but I couldn't find a non-thumbnail image of it on the internet. Also, has anyone else noticed that Icatian Crier is standing in front of the ruins of the Icatian Town? I never noticed that before...
  • Icatia is dominated by humans, so I gave them the bonus. "Humans get +1/+1" seems like good Plane material, since Humans appear in almost all sets and in every color. I admit, though, it's one of the easiest things to remove here.
  • "Attacking creatures gain" is admittedly a warped version of the en-Kor ability, which pops up in Tempest block. I wanted something to represent all the banding happening in Icatia, since this set is probably the high water mark of banding in Magic. Tempest's first stab is one of the simplest and easiest... I tied it to 'attacking only' to encourage attacks, make it less likely to dodge Shock, and give it more of banding's original feel.
  • The Chaos ability is tied to Sarpadia's story, that each of the five lands and peoples of Sarpadia were overthrown by a faction that got out of control once the global climate started changing. In Icatia, it's Ferrel and his zealots that destroy the empire of Icatia. Hit a threshold of Cultists, and they tear Icatia down.
  • Jolly flavourful, at least.
