Why as a sorcery+token instead of a "Pludering Giant" creature?

But it's an interesting card. Usually X creatures are rare, and better than this, but this sort of potentially-big but overcosted card is the sort of thing red gets in limited, so this may actually be about right for common!

cleaner and easier to understand at common as a sorcery+token mainly so it was the simplest implementation.

Plus I needed a Sorcery and I originally had this as a "Plundering Giant" style creature that wouldn't fit because of the other creatures I wanted/needed at common so...serendipity.

Plus, thematically it can be said to represent several giants turning up for "their share" of the loot, especially if a lot of mana is dumped into it.

If it wasn't such a terrible casting cost, I would have suggested {x}{x}{x}{r}{r} to put X 3/3 Giants onto the battlefield, since that sounds more flavor appropriate. Not only is that casting cost ugly, but people don't like to pay 5 for a 3/3, even when it's fair. It's a pity we've yet to get a 'colored X' mana symbol for things like Consume Spirit, and maybe Frozen Shade. While it would still be ill-advised, {x}{x}{X=R}{r} would at least be a competitive casting cost. Hmm... Colored X. I wonder what the symbol would look like?

Probably like Phyrexian mana {pr}: an X in a colored circle.

Ah. Don't make the X colored, make the background colored. Yeah, that would work.

I could drop it to {x}{r} and no people don't usually like to pay 5 for a 3/3 but 6 for a 4/4, 7 for a 5/5, 8 for a 6/6 is more common

I'm not sure, but I think XRR is probably correct. I think (XR)(XR) is probably too harsh; it will be too good if someone plays a mono-red deck, and probably unplayable otherwise. (X)(XR) or (X)(XR)(R) would be a possibility, but is a bit too funky :)

I like the "X 3/3 giants" but I think that should be uncommon, I think at common it would be better with just two modes.

I'm reminded of my silly card Firesnake Eruption. Which is also too good; it pretty much obsoletes Lightning Elemental and is jolly efficient at other casting spots too.

I think {x}{r}{r} is best. The flexibility makes up for the inefficiency. {x}{r} would be your choice of Gray Ogre, Hill Giant, Fomori Nomad, etc... which might be OK because none of those are powerhouses... hmm.

I figured the utility of this warranted the extra {r} for just those reasons Alex. :-)

Sir, I third pick Fomori Nomads. Those things are powerhouses.
