For Challenge # 038.
Yeowch. That's pretty painful. Reminds me of Perplex: how much do you care about the spell? No use on a game-winning spell, but close to a hard counter on an early spell. Sensible design.
FWIW, MaRo and others at Wizards have stated that emblems are a thing they're only doing on planeswalkers. But meh, I think that's a silly decision anyway.
Yeah, this seems about right.
Although, I feel it might be simpler as a UB spell with "Counter target spell unless its controller sacrifices a land". That's not quite the same, but pretty similar :)
FWIW I'm still annoyed by Emblems at all. I think they're a reasonable solution if you do want lots of "until the end of the game" effects, but that you usually don't. And that as soon as they made Emblems exist, they invited people to start saying "ooh, maybe we'll make a spell that targets an emblem", and I'm sure Mark Rosewater will avoid any of those being designed as long as he can, but he failed for some things :)
I think this would work better as a flash enchantment. But I just tried to work on the wording, and yeuch.
Enchant Player Flash When ~ ETBs, Target spell's controller chooses: Counter that spell or Counter ~. Spells enchanted player controls cost
more to cast.
I'm aware that emblems are only for planeswalkers, and I agree that they should be. I only made it as is because, as Vitenka points out, making it an enchantment is somewhat difficult.
