You know, I'd cite 3 or 4 cards in Magic's past that really didn't care about the fact that it could untap itself. Tidewater Minion specifically leaps to mind. But that Gideon's Avenger reference makes me question my own wisdom. It's possible that a post-Lorwyn world shouldn't allow that sort of easy interaction anymore... not sure.
What kind of shenanigans can be pulled with Gideon's Avenger? I don't see anything terrible, unless my intent is to infinitely tap-untap Tidepuller until I can Phthisis the Avenger for lethal.
Ha, ignoring any bad interactions with existing cards, I just realized that letting it target itself made a really ridiculous combo with Manipulating Wires. Oh well!
You should probably specify "another target permanent" in order to prevent shenanigans, such as with Gideon's Avenger.
