:) I think I was trying out variants on iconic creature types, although now it definitely seems weird.
I can't remember my exact intention. I think I wanted something that would combine several cheap effects into a reasonably tricky combat trick, in that this won't always do anything, but in the right circumstance, it could be a 2-for-1, or more.
In retrospect, it might be better to have a "Untap target creature. It gets -2/-0 UEOT". The flexibility of playing on your creature or your opponent's may justify it.
But yes, the current version could target the same creature twice, except that's unlikely to ever matter?
I think I'm happy that you just get lucky in that case (Electrostatic Bolt is sort of precedent that red can do extra damage to artifact creatures). But if I developed it further maybe I'd decide I prefer the crush version (maybe at a slightly cheaper cost), I don't know.
I am just struck by trying to picture an octopus sphinx.
"Untap that creature", "untap another target creature", or "untap target creature"? Currently, this spell allows you to target different target creatures, including the same one twice, in the way that Seeds of Strength do. I don't think many players would realize this, though... cards like seeds of strength work with player perception because of what players imagine it must do.
What if your opponent has an artifact creature, say Phyrexian Dreadnought? There's no way you could Shock that thing, and since Crushing it seems impossible, why should you be able to Shatter it? My point is, make it target creatures and noncreature artifacts. By the way, I have a more powerful version in my set, http://multiverse.heroku.com/cards/8498 .
"I rather like these."
Thank you!
The template you suggested in the last comment is a good description, yes, putting "gains all" on each makes it clearer. I'm not currently developing this set, so I probably won't revamp anything for the immediate future (feel free to borrow the idea). In fact, the last I was thinking was to make it like germ tokens: have a vanilla 1/1 token which gets all of the "super" abilities, which removes any confusion about when you may be able to transfer the abilities, and stops you having to remember what you designated.
@jmgariepy: He's correct. The last layer is P/T switching, but that applies to the P/T at that point, taking into account all other modifications. Timestamps don't come into it.
So if we have a 2/4 with +1/+4 and then switch, it does become an 8/3. If it became a 5/6, what would be the point of saying the last layer is P/T switching? It sounds like you're wanting to apply the P/T in a very early layer.
Accordingly, there's no need for the complex suggestions in your second paragraph: the card as written works the way he wants it to.
Aha! I was thinking about what's going on here, and I think some of my confusion comes from the fact that these support teams are giving something they don't have. What if they read more like this?
Infiltrator Support Team
Creature - Human Support
Shroud
When ~ enters the battlefield, choose a non-support creature. That creature gains all abilities that all support creatures have.
The cost would probably have to be adjusted a little. This version also probably needs the "when" instead of "as comes into play" just for goofiness problems with cards like Warp World. After all, the non-support creatures gaining the support creatures abilities would also gain the "As this comes into play" ability, and I have no idea what would happen then.
I rather like these. I think I'll steal them for a future set. I could easily see 15+ of these guys playing the role of Allies, like you suggested.
I got to admit, I'm not sure what's going on here. I assume that the idea is that if there are two of these in play, you would choose two different creatures, and both those creatures get all keywords that all support teams are supplying? The other option is that all the keywords get piled on one creature, but that would be a detriment... If this was the case, I don't understand why these cards wouldn't just say "When this comes into play, choose a creature. That creature gains X.", or possibly just "T: Target creature gains X."
EDIT: I know the previous comment is frustrating, since it looks like you already answered someone's question on the subject. But the response that "you get one big thing" just confuses me. Only one creature is "One big thing", or are multiple creatures "One big thing"?
Also, the flavor is kind of strange, since they're supposed to be support teams, but I'm guessing that most of the time they're going to give the bonuses to themselves or other support teams...
Are you sure the power and toughness switches on Bionic Arm as well? It's my understanding that the last layer in timestamp order is power and toughness switching. All other modifiers (including continuous power and toughness boosts) are modified before, then the printed power and toughness of the card switches. Meaning that a 2/4 equipped with +1/+4 would become a 5/6, and not a 8/3 like you suggest. (assuming I'm right. Timestamp stuff IS hard. While I'm 95% certain what I said is true, I'm 99.5% certain that temporary boosts, for example, an instant that grants +1/+4 until end of turn, would always wait for the card to switch its printed value before applying, whether the spell was cast after, or before the creature switched its power and toughness.)
Wouldn't this just be simpler if the ability gave +4/+1 instead when turned on? Or maybe there could be a strange "As long as ~ is untapped, it gets +1/+4, and as long as ~ is tapped, +4/+1" and the ability to tap/untap it for ?
Repent, Harlequin!
I agree, Octopi aren't known for running (slithering/tentacling?) over the top of things but for getting up close and grappling. I think the crad would be fine without trample - PLUS it would fit your design aesthetic as right now the creature gets 5 things from this equipment, lose trample and you have another even number.
I like it, but it doesn't need trample. Nothing about Octopus arms screams trample to me... it just makes the equipment more powerful. The creature equipped by this already has an evasion ability that's apropriate the the card, anyway.
I can't not think of Dr. Octopus when I envision this thing.
Funny. I epected the journalist to reveal the top card of the library, and if its a superhero, sacrifice Journalist and put the superhero into play. You know... mild mannered reporter over here.
Footsteps of the Goryo doesn't give haste.
Camruth: Thank you, good idea. I left several cards as ???? as I wanted to look tat them together and see what new types, if any, I needed and what could fit existing types. Artificer is a good suggestion.
Alex: Thanks. Changed to match card colour. I wasn't positive what colour this would go in, but there was more room in white so I put it here for the moment.
Also, the mana cost is curious...
Inventor, Genius? in regular MtG parlance I think he'd be an Artificer as I am guessing he is a gadgets/super science kind of guy ?
Alex: Sorry :) OK, workaround found. I put the dash in the mechanic name and now I think it works like an ability word fine.
Chris: The idea is that you get one big thing. I debated whether you had two identical support teams the duplicates should "trickle down" to the next biggest creature, or just be redundant. For now I decided to do the simpler version of just having one, and make the abilities as little redundant as possible.
It depends how annoying it is to have a duplicate; hopefully not too much, if you can then more easily risk losing one.
Hmm, I do need to make my mechanic support a bit more flexible... Use case noted :)
