I designed Gentlemen Magicians not as a cohesive set, but by coming up with a lot of independent ideas, and then seeing if I could massage them into a card set. Here I wanted to try the opposite: see if I could make 20 plausible blue commons that hit a standard design skeleton (as done in GDS2) and see which ones I liked.

I picked "superhero" as something flavourful but that wizards were not likely to do.

Blue commons are created, and not proofread or playtested, but are intended to fit normal design constraints. They are probably a tad more complex than ideal, but I strived to make them balanced and simple-flavourful rather than making everything too complicated. There's a mix of superhero-specific flavour, and fairly generic ideas I liked.

The breakdown should be 100 commons, 18 for each colour, a cycle of lands, and five artifacts.

I wanted to see how quickly I could flesh out plausible if not outstanding blue commons, and did so earlier this evening. I chose to concentrate on designing flavour-based cards rather than including a mechanical theme, although I can definitely see why most sets have a mechanical theme. I wanted to avoid reprints, and ended up compromising by slightly bending what I thought was normal, but it's much more natural to design a set when a third of the cards can be "standard blue common mechanic + new mechanic for this block"

In blue, I used eight creatures, ten spells, and tried to include all the standard mechanics. I designed some uncommon cards as well, but haven't uploaded them.
