For Challenge # 138. I suppose if Avacyn, Scourge of Hope is to be released by Grisselbrand, then I should provide alt-Grisselbrand who would be willing to do it. Plagued by the part he took to capture the Angel that threatened to judge this world, Grisselbrand was unprepared for the depravity soon to follow when vampires and werewolves were left unchecked. He is willing to sacrifice anything to end the reign of terror that he helped bring, even if it means releasing the destroyer back into the world.
Also, it appears that I've lined up Sorin to be blue in some way. Guess I'll work on an alt-Planeswalker tomorrow.
Okay, switched to B/G/W added Vigilance back in the mix. I just got to wait for the image to update through Picassa. Now that it's finished, I think this is one of the first cards I've seen that looks BGW without forcing it. This version of Avacyn is into a sort of 'naturalism', but her way of perfecting this evil world is to replace it with a void.
In retropect, this ability would probably make more sense in green. Albeit without the flying. Ah well...
Avacyn, Scourge of Hope
For Challenge # 138. In this reality, Sorin is still the twisted guardian of Innistrad, but Avacyn is determined to be its destroyer. I suppose that means that the demon Griselbrand would be Avacyn's liberator? Works for me.
Oh, I see. Right, that is less good. I think it's acceptable as-is: ultimate-type effects do occasionally bypass the pie to do board-sweeps. "Creatures, lands and planeswalkers" would be better, but only if it fits, I'm long on words already...
And blue felt least natural, but I had to try. Gideon the Just
Unfortunately, the cards are probably too similar to all be printed in a cycle :)
See Challenge # 138, based mostly on Gideon Jura
It's not the exile that put me off but rather that the ultimate hits artifacts and enchantments.
No particular reason for 6/1, just that it's super-red. And won't usually make a difference since damage is prevented. I guess I could give him trample to make up to the vulnerability to -X/-X effects?
Add starting loyalty
Oh, awesome. I made "destroy" positive because he needed SOME positive ability, and I increased the mana cost to compensate. But "loyaltylink" is an awesome black-gideon ability, that's much better.
I considered changing the ultimate to "destroy" just to be different, but black and white both do exile. I decided the flavour of "exile all others" was plenty black, even though it's been white more often in the past.
Cost 6->5, added "loyaltylink", changed destroy cost 0->-2
You forgot the starting loyalty. I really like the feel of "come at me bro" in red. I'm curious as to why you made his creature form a 6/1 though.
Gideon Jura makes me think the first ability should be a - ability. It's also going to be very hard to ever get to the ultimate if he only gets one counter a turn. Also, I think the ultimate does need to be shifted to black in some manner.
To increase the counters maybe have the 0 ability go off whenever he'd deal damage to a player put that many +1/+1 counters on him? It'd be like a planeswalker lifelink.
And what the heck, let's try black. Gideon, Champion of Judgement combines a couple of different Gideon abilities. It's a shame to have destroy and exile on the same card, but they were the black-est abilities.
See Challenge # 138.
And Gideon of Jura
See Challenge # 138.
Having made a green version, I thought I'd try a red...
For Challenge # 138
Colour-shifted version of Gideon, Ally of Zendikar. The whole "become a creature" thing works very well as green, and the other effects work ok too.
Gideon, Protector of Zendikar
I like seeing menace to keep the card's aggressive aspect. The altered second ability is really reminiscent of black on Innistrad too.
I made Thalia, Betrayer of Thraben.
See Challenge # 138.
Yes, I was joking - I didn't really think there wad time travel, but I was curious what had gone wrong in case it wad interesting :)
B->w
Very nice. Looks pretty strong: a lot of things can let you gain life every turn, and having your guildgate turn automatically into an increasingly large creature for free does seem pretty good.
