Oddly enough, I thought Vitenka's template "You may tap enchanted creature instead of paying the cost for its activated abilities" was probably best...
Thank you! Huh. No, I didn't think I could manage anything "distinguished" (I'll assume the creative department make the flavour fit :)). It seemed the obvious interpretation of the apples mechanic to me. Each other player chooses one card from their hand and shows it to the active player. The active player chooses one of them. The one whose card got chosen gets THIS card as a reward. But I've learned that whatever I think is obvious other people don't see at all, and whatever I think is subtle other people think is WRITTEN IN BIG LETTERS ALL OVER THE FRONT, so I can never get something at the right level :)
I was going to say, I saw something essentially backwards to the opening comment: "Based on Get Out Of Jail Free - the Jail in this case being 'not losing'" :)
Interesting: somewhere between Greenweaver Druid and Oracle of Mul Daya.
As a card, I love it! I'm not sure I see the Apples to Apples connection, especially "Distinguished", but it's a great design independent from that.
These things are usually done with a "You may treat this as though" kind of effect rather than a "I will overwrite this to be" kind of effect. So I think for once Vitenka's suggested templating is pretty good.
I might perhaps alter it slightly to something like "You may activate each activated ability of enchanted creature as if its cost was "
"."
Well... although kinda in reverse.
I was trying to do what I thought was the simplest expression of Vitenka's "buy twice" = "play a land twice" ability. I don't like the way the first ability sounds clunky, although I was trying to match the original idea as best as possible, and it's also nice that you can pay to play an extra land if you want, even if you don't draw one. (Although annoyingly, this will rarely be useful after turn 4, I imagine.)
Originally this was "
,
: draw a card, you may play an extra land", which was nice and simple, and I was surprised that 3, T to draw wasn't completely off the chart too powerful, but it was clearly too good having that and another ability. So I reduced the first ability to just filter for lands (which still helps late-game by getting them off your draw step); the combination of the two tap abilities still feels woodcutter-y although it's not as elegant as I'd hoped.
Removed
cost on first ability
Was: Draw a card. May play an additional land.
Also Distinguished Consul, and Champion Woodcutter which I thought was the simplest expression of Vitenka's idea.
Ignoring the bluff element, 5/4 without evasion isn't THAT stompy; maybe up the cost to uu3? Then again, each opponent is probably going to show you the least useful card they can, so maybe as it is is fine.
Another attempt at the "Apples to Apples" mechanic from Challenge # 024.
I'm not sure how it would play. In fact, you should always be able to get the better of the deal since you don't have to choose a card, so either get a 5/4, or get a better spell that your opponent had been saving if you play it at the right time. OTOH, I love the idea that the opponent might be able to bluff you by revealing a card that looks better than this, but they have an answer to in hand.
"My faith in humanity would be shattered if I didn't believe that every member of R&D didn't know their obscure Star Wars references ... scans internet No, I guess not."
ROFL!
I'm not sure if it works, but I'm not sure it doesn't work. The rules already has the concept of "announce a spell, see if you can pay costs (playing mana abilities as necessary). If so continue, if not, back up" so... maybe it just works the same way, except that you back up whether it works or not. I'm not convinced it's that elegant, but I'm not sure which cases actually don't work...
I agree basing it on CMC would make it a lot more straightforward, but I'm not sure if it's interesting enough then. Maybe there should be someone chooses a color moment involved?
That would be a lot more obviously 'inspired by'.
Maybe instead?:
The cost of all activated abilities on this creature become "
".
Heh. I kind of want this card to ask you to roll two six-sided dice, and to sacrifice if you get doubles...
@Jack: My faith in humanity would be shattered if I didn't believe that every member of R&D didn't know their obscure Star Wars references. I'm betting that the name sounded right to everyone, but they didn't know why. Most of them going "Kessig Run", huh? Is there a Kessig Run? scans internet No, I guess not. Sounds comfortably familiar, though.
Howsabout:
You may tap enchanted creature instead of paying the cost for its activated abilities.
Pretty sure I already tried to make this in my set.
Ah no, I put together: Until end of turn all creature abilities with
in their cost, have 'sacrifice this creature' instead.
Maybe you could have
"Reveal your hand. If you didn't reveal a non-land card with converted mana cost 4 or less, draw four cards"
For Challenge # 024
Based on Telekinetic Charging Cell. It should allow you to activate any ability of the creature for "
" instead of paying its activation cost. I don't know if there's a better template
Nifty. Clearly powerful, but also clearly temporary.
Not really lockdown, unless you've got two of them and the opponent's hand is full. Reminds me of the situation when someone's got a combo to put a creature on top of its owner's library each turn. The opponent can get to see new cards, they just need to stop playing creatures.
And yeah, I don't think it's necessary to let Infect taint the idea of poison forever.
Good challenge!
- Get Out Of Jail Free: Temporary Reprieve
- Telekinetic Charging Cell: Become the Master
For Challenge # 024
Based on Get Out Of Jail Free - the Jail in this case being "losing".
