Yep, this time you had a name overlap with one of mine: though amusingly your Bait // Switch was enemy-coloured while mine was ally-coloured :)
Here's my cycle that inspired the challenge: Bait // Switch Up // Coming Rinse // Repeat Roast // Ground Hunger // Poverty
Rather than keep giving partial info, I decided I might as well put my cycle up. Here: Bait // Switch.
Doh! No, I remembered it from your list of card names, but I completely forgot it was an existing name, not a new name.
Thank you! Yes, I love the way different people come up with very different ideas on hybrid cards and split cards.
:) Thank you. Ooh, which colours? I thought Switch was a natural for U/R, but I was pleased when I found a good way to make in UG. I wasn't sure if Bait was an obvious name, except maybe for provoke, but when I thought of worms I decided it fit fairly well.
Not sure if you realised this was a clash with Protect // Serve. The names-to-effects-to-colours are awesomely matched. I don't quite know where Serve fits, but
seems at least plausible.
This Conquer is certainly fine for white - cf Planar Cleansing and in fact Fated Retribution - as well as black - In Garruk's Wake. Pity about the name clash with Conquer, though, indeed.
Awesome! I love how designing hybrid cards, especially under other constraints, forces us to think laterally, and come up with some really interesting designs :)
I don't think "draw 2 then discard 3" quite screams "draw" to me. (If anything it screams Bazaar of Baghdad, but that's just for hysterical raisins.) I think a Braingeyser, or a looting version of it, would be best suited to the simplest name "draw".
But Quarter is fantastic. Very interesting, and plausible in both white and red.
Hee, this is one of the names that was on my allied-colour cycle :) Pretty different effects, though your Switch has things in common with mine. And indeed neither yours nor mine is quite anything that's been printed before, but I think yours makes great sense in green-blue. Very interesting variation between Cytoshape and Flash/Dramatic Entrance, indeed.
And the enemy-coloured cycle: Sickness // Health Bait // Switch Protect // Serve Draw // Quarter Command // Conquer
Do we have any duplicates this time around? :) Maybe even the same name for a different colour-pair, given how some of the names don't have an obvious connection to the colour other than by that particular card.
Yeah, people asked to design split cards must feel like https://xkcd.com/208/ for puns :)
Yeah, I thought there was some "you draw instead", but I wasn't sure if that covered "no-one draws instead". I guess, effects that are subsets of other effects or weaker versions of other effects are sometimes in another colour, but there's no reason it needs to be here, it's suggestive that U is a good place for it if it exists.
Interrogation Charm has 3 modes , 2 that work from the hand....
Thank you! I'm very excited to see your cycle, though it makes sense to give people a chance to experiment first.
I'm pleased there's no overlap! I expected MOST to be quite different, but I thought there was a good chance of overlap somewhere, either by picking an especially nice name, or in one of the colour pairs where there's an especially useful mechanical overlap and not much else. I'm pleasantly surprised it worked out.
Oh indeed, I think the absolute best split card names are where both sides' mechanics take a different meaning of the word to the meaning in the aphorism. I think the best example is Odds // Ends: in the phrase "odds and ends" "odds" doesn't mean "chance" or "probability", and nor does "ends" mean "deaths". Most official split cards don't manage to quite live up to that though.
On the "skip the draw" front there's Plagiarize, actually, which is good enough blue precedent for this. Obviously more expensive, but that was because it could apply to more than one and also gave the card-draw to you.
Thank you! "Duck" was the first idea I had, but it took me ages to think of "cover" in an appropriate colour.
I'd forgotten you'd made another Duck // Cover on Challenge # 090, as part of another difficult cycle! But "make a 1/1 flying creature" is a lot simpler.
Yeah, I wasn't sure about "turn face down", but like "the next time target player would draw a card, instead they don't", it just felt quite right. It's existed in U on Ixidron, and not on B but it's so creature-removal-y it has to make sense. And it fits especially well in UB with the name "cover" since it has sneaky flavour. I wasn't sure if it was too creature-removal-y in U, it may still be too good, but I'd forgotten pongify, that makes me think it's quite good U gets this on rare occasions.
It's funny both my UB halves had new mechanics: I guess maybe because UB has a lot a conceptual overlap, but not a lot of existing mechanical overlap.
Awesome! Very nice work!
And as I suspected/hoped, not a single card name overlap with my yet-to-be-posted cycle. Yay :) (No mechanical overlap either, though that's not so surprising; there is a fair number of hybrid effects after all.)
Now interestingly, "tap target creature" would look pretty out-of-place in green. But "tap target creature and it doesn't untap in its controller's next untap step" has a fair amount of precedent in green, particularly the Orochi in Kamigawa such as Matsu-Tribe Sniper :) I guess it's not been seen much since then though, except for Entangling Vines which was seen as a bit of a colour-bleed.
I certainly think that just "tap target creature" on its own would be poor. Cf Niveous Wisps. So this is probably fine. I'm certainly happier with it on here than with the
effect on Heel // Tow :P
