Unlike Snakes, Hyenas have zero tribal support, only having 3 cards. Also Gnolls have been getting pretty positive reactions due to being a well known DnD race.
It can be argued either way, should Aetherborn have been Elementals? Servos been Constructs?
Hyenas. They're a preexisted creature type which makes it easier to make a tribal Hyena deck. And the Kenra and Ainok show that's the default way to do Animal-folk. (With Nagas being an exception due to pre-existing in an actual mythology, while Knolls are a modern invention.)

This is indeed interesting. I think it is a tiny bit overpowered, but not very much. (Which is a fiddly place to be, as most nerfs are a bit too nerfy. Maybe Legendary?)
There's a little trick in that you can tap, say, a Mountain for , then play this and waste the already-tapped Mountain; so its drawback need not apply on the turn you play it.
Just skip the whole "sacrifice unless"-part and state just that they must waste a non-Waste (nonwasted?) land they control. Worst comes to worst they have to waste Eye of the Desert itself.
Though I don't think the drawback would be enough in your average environment.
Oh, hey! It's Salvage! You almost invented, beat for beat, a mechanic I invented for New Mirrodin. See also: Renewed Vows.
Given how two of us came up with the mechanic independently (and oddly did it with the same name) I'm guessing this is bound to be a mechanic that Wizards will do as well some day. We couldn't have been the only people to have thought of 'cycling from the graveyard'.
A bigger Brain Maggot
Card for the U/R salvage/prowess deck
A bigger Invasive Species
Playing around with giving R/G a high color cost subtheme
A fat Vanilla

I'm currently leaning towards Gnolls
According to Mark Rosewater this Mechanic was considered for Amonkhet as heiroglyphics, but scrapped due to Investigate in SOI.

Mmm... it's pretty darn good. It's always your second land; and now you have
{*}. And wastes can be good for you, in this set.
Still, even if pushed - it's not much overpowered. Would need testing; it's certainly 'run 4 of' in any 3+ colour deck.
