this is all black.
I want this card for EDH. Though, I feel lit would be a bit more fair and still mythic at 3UUU or 4UU.
nice.
Similar to Joraga Warcaller, it's the "eggs in one basket" school of swingy cards.
Yeah, I agree that this card deserves some explanation.
1) First and foremost, I should note this was definitely meant to be a bad mythic. (As in, I'm certainly not going to defend that it's a good card.) You gotta have them in every set, and given how absurd blue's other two mythics are, I thought this would be a reasonable balancer. Now to explain why I thought this card deserved mythic, when Overwhelming Intellect was uncommon...
2) The difference between Essence Scatter and Counterspell is huge, as is similarly that between Bone to Ash and Dismiss. Note that in each case the first card is recent, while the second has essentially been deemed "too good". Consequently, what I've noticed is that hard unconditional counters that also do something else have been both expensive and at rare these days (e.g. Counterlash). And especially comparing this card to Dismiss or Cryptic Command (the latter of which does other things, sure, but still is often counter-draw), five mana didn't seem at all right for the card.
3) Finally, keep in mind the special circumstances of this set: namely, how much more powerful card draw is in the context of Psych. In this format, being able to counter a huge spell and then net four to five cards and/or psych counters seems to me quite epic enough to warrant a mythic rarity.
Hope that addresses at least some of the concerns about this card. I kind of expected that pushing this at mythic would feel off to some people, but I still stand by the decision.
I put this in the set before Pit Fight was spoiled, so yes, I was a little miffed when I saw that card. Still, costing 3 doesn't stop the card from being solid removal, and I think worrying about "overcosted" Limited fodder is like comparing Glory Seeker to Knight of Cliffhaven.
I think the risk of blowouts is the only thing that balances this card out from being completely unfair.
Some mythics seem exciting to a small (or nonexistant) part of the player base. Eg. Mindbreak Trap doesn't do anything other than counter a spell, and Sphinx's Revelation is very cool, but only because it potentially draws lots of cards.
So I don't know. This does in fact seem like the sort of gut-punch blue would like to finish with, which seems an acceptable mythic. The problem being the obvious ones that (i) it only works if your opponent plays the appropriate spell and (ii) it doesn't actually win the game in any way.
Yow, six? I guess it's a lot of cards. And it does seem like a game turning kind of effect. But not really flashy enough.
Maybe it ought to let you cast the spell? Or pithing needle it?
Hmm, yeah. This would be a disappointing mythic to pull.
So Overwhelming Intellect expanded to hit any kind of spell costs one paint more (seems fine)... but at mythic?
They're all in one place and so vulnerable to all going bang at once... But yes, a nice epic.
Nice. I'd trade my draw for a Glorious Anthem in most cases, yes.
Seems overcosted given Pit Fight.
I'm okay with color bleeding a little bit. (This was actually in an earlier version of Zaberoth, then taken out, then put back in again just now.)
I think it's more accurate to say Mark Rosewater has made it clear that his opinion is that Hornet Sting should never have been printed, but his opinion was overruled by the M11 team.
I actually really like the idea of a 1/1 token that (possibly optionally) fights something. That seems to fulfil the same mechanical need, but still feel very very green. Or maybe even just "deals damage equal to its power" instead of "deals 1 damage" would feel more green, even though that's normally red too.
(I'm not sure if I agree with Rosewater about hornet sting or not. I agree that if any green direct damage exists, this is a good example of it.)
Maybe you could get away with a 1/1 token that fights something when it ETB. Maybe.
Yet it was. A lot of people in R&D disagree on this subject, evidently. This is a pretty flavorful take on the subject, at least.

One more wave of changes! Mostly involving green. Apparently I just can't leave decent enough alone.
