Playing around with a more general version of fading/vanishing/time counters in general.

Huh. That's a really obvious thing to do. Nice!

Of course, it's also a pure-downside mechanic, right now. Wonder if it might be a better feel if it was more like clockwork?

Yeah, that's one of my main concerns. The way it reads, it reads too similarly to Fading or Vanishing, which are both downside mechanics. Removing counters is generally seen as a downside, too. The problem is adjusting the wording/gameplay so that it's seen as an upside instead of a downside.

There's also the kicker problem where the mechanic might eat up too much design space that could be used by other mechanics. There's the obvious red Spark Elemental variant that can obviously be made with this, but you can have stuff similar to Aeon Chronicler or Roiling Horror, or Saproling Burst (say, for example, if a creature had Countdown 1 and Remove a time counter: Destroy target attacking creature or something). It's mostly a shelved mechanic for some time-based set I may make later on.

I'm honestly not a fan of the clockwork cards, but that might just be because of their power level than anything.

You could have "If it has counters, something; if not, something else" then it's a mode-switch but pure upside?

Of course, then it has accidental-vs-cheating problems, but that's already there with this one.
