I looked for another interpretation of Velfens competing for status, and considered something quite straight-forward. I wasn't sure which way round to do it: if it rewards you for having more, it's a bit win-more. If it rewards you for having less, it's an incentive to not play cards.

It may also be too fiddly to keep counting. I also considered something like, counting mana costs but that was even more arithmetic.
