For Challenge # 115 in a cycle with Syzygy Sphinx
This is one without "defending player chooses one", so I need to make the black one do that too. But it's supposed to feel similar in spirit, that the opponent has to choose right, although again, it may be too obvious.
I also wish I could get a better flavour of "it asks you a riddle and if you get it wrong it eats you". Maybe "choose a creature defending player controls, they may reveal a card from their hand with the same CMC, if not, ~ fights it", would that work?
I would at least like to see the attacker make the choice, because otherwise this is almost a drawback.
But it's deliberately "may" so at worst, they have a 4/X and you don't get any benefit. Whereas if they've only smaller creatures, they lose one a turn. And if they have a large creature, they still have to deal with the risk you have a pump spell. But I agree, I'd like it to be more interactive. But I don't like just "fight target creature" because that doesn't have the guessing element, and is oppressive if you can just mow down all the small creatures.
I'm sorry. Somehow I missed the "may." Disregard my statement about it feeling like a drawback. :)
No worries, makes sense.
When two of the cycle didn't fly, I considered "must be blocked by exactly one creature" which had a similar effect in a different way. But even though it's never downside, I'm not entirely happy with it as thinky-upside...
