Created for Challenge # 114. I felt that challenge didn't have enough guidance so I rolled random to get another challenge to combine with it, getting Challenge # 017.
Wergle. The two challenges fit together, sortof (they're both asking to revisit an old plane), but...! So that's asking for a card that's both one-mana and also multicolour (therefore hybrid), with an iconic effect for its colour pair, that "could have appeared in" a particular old nongold plane. Iiinteresting. Hybrid has so far only appeared in heavily multicolour blocks (Ravnica, Shadowmoor, Alara, Return to Ravnica, and looks like it's coming up in Fate Reforged as well).
So I need to choose a block that wasn't (heavily) multicolour first time round, but "could have" had hybrid cards printed in it. I'm going to take "could have" as implying hybrid existed then, so that's after Ravnica blocks.
Multicolour blocks since then (that don't fit the terms of the challenge): Ravnica, Shadowmoor, Alara, Return to Ravnica, Khans of Tarkir
Predominantly-monocolour blocks since then (options for me): Time Spiral, Lorwyn, Zendikar, Scars of Mirrodin, Innistrad, Theros
And I'm looking for a colour-pair that can have a one-mana spell with an iconic effect for that colour-pair.
Lorwyn seems an interesting possibility. That set focused on a number of colour pairs, but the only gold cards were the rare legends for each tribe. Wizards could easily have printed some hybrid cards as well though, to smooth drafts. In that case, I'd be looking for an iconic effect that works with Merfolk, Faeries, Goblins, Giants, Kithkin, or Elves. Thinking through the flavour of those tribes, and the common one-mana effects suitable for hybrid cards, one natural idea stands out.
So the idea is this could have been printed instead of Lace with Moonglove; or could alternatively be printed in a Return to Lorwyn.
