For Challenge # 053 as a mash-up of Kemuri-Onna and Shatter.

This mash-up couldn't avoid being very close to Yuki-Onna given the ingredients, but I decided I could stick with my original idea of a sorcery or instant that returned to hand, rather than submitting another reprint :)

I changed "spirit or arcane" to "spirit" so the flavour works and its not tied to Kamigawa block.

I quite like the idea of a shatter than comes back to hand because it's obviously very useful if your opponent has multiple artifacts, but not broken because you can't guarantee a return, nor guarantee a target.

I wasn't sure about the cost. Wizards gave in and made Smelt as a strict upgrade on Shatter. This would probably be fine at a range of costs, but I decided it should be R sorcery speed so it wasn't compared directly with either.

I added a cost to the return ability from Rosewater's philosophy that you should normally have to invest in effects you want and decide if they're worth it.

But it's a shame you can't cast it multiple times if you have multiple spirits on the stack. That's probably not too likely. But maybe it should be 1R instant with no cost to recur, even if that's strictly better than shatter?

I was musing on submitting Yuki-Onna too :)

I, um, have a feeling this card is missing some text though... ;)

There have been a couple of better-than-Shatters before: Shattering Pulse, Smash to Smithereens. Wizards also agree you can get a {r} sorcery Shatter with upside - Shattering Spree.

The name is excellent.

I like it as-is. Maybe in a spirit-themed storm deck?

Thank you for the name! Yes, it just sprang to mind fully-formed when I looked at the mechanics, but now I really like it: the card would seem completely random if you just stapled a spirit trigger to a shatter spell (cough kamigawa :)), but when I realised that, I realised the flavour completely justified the card, which is a rare treat for a mash up :)

Edit: Although I hadn't realised Yuki-Onna was a figure of japanese mythology? She seems to be associated with snow and wind, which is sort of shattery, but wikipedia doesn't give a more direct connection. But if it works for people who know her, then I apologise for doubting wizards. Either way, thank you to wizards for introducing me to the mythology :)

Added non-trivial rules text

@Alex: Thank you! Oops, I knew I forgot something, but didn't realise I left out the only text that actually made the card do anything :)

Hm. The flavour would work better if it was a R instant that only hit non-creature artifacts, but then it's much much less useful. I think I'll leave it as is for now, though 1R instant would also be good.
