This may even be too good in this set, but whoever suggested it was right, it should be in here :)

This seemed like the most obvious answer to me when I suggested it. It would be spectacular to see this card become #1 common pick in the set, neh?

I'm not 100% sold that this is our marquee serpent, but whoever designs the marquee serpent should notice everything that this card is doing right for us. Namely:

  • Rewards you for playing mono
  • Only requires one of your opponent's lands to be an Island to operate at maximum effeciency
  • Is simple in execution, and
  • Is a strong card when played with the flood mechanic, making the mechanic look relevant.
  • This seems a very nice reprint for the set. (Serpent of the Endless Sea)

As I said up there, I would have marked the Serpent as most likely to succeed. But in green, I talked about separating green's ability from blue's ability, and one of the things I suggested was making it so that blue only really needed one island on the opponent's table to do it's thing, while green wanted +1/+1 counters for everybody.

Well, I'm finalizing blue. And this card is the only thing standing in the way of that philosophy. We've got

  • Say that our original concern wasn't really that big of a deal, and not worry about it.
  • Say that this card can be an exception to the rule. (Something I personally, don't like, because it screws with how you draft blue.)
  • Change this card.

It still makes tons of sense to me to make this a large island-caring serpent, so I'm taking suggestions. I'll also take the suggestion "Leave it alone." if enough people are insistent.

  • I think "Leave it alone" is equivalent to your options 1 or 2, isn't it?

I don't get the problem, though. This card does indeed only need one island on the opponent's table. But it also rewards you for having lots... in other words, it encourages monocolour. Still sounds great for the set to me.

Yeah, you're watching me split my brain into two parts an argue with myself there. One that thinks it's a good idea to change it, and one that thinks its a good idea to leave it alone. They didn't communicate very well with each other, however, and both acted like the other one wasn't in the room talking at the same time, so they kind of contradicted each other and said the same thing. ;)

The 'problem' is that this encourages you to turn multiple lands you control into islands... not your opponent's lands. It does seem to be a minor distinction, though. We'll see if anyone else makes a kerfuffle, but I'll probably leave this alone.

This is great in the set. In monoblue, it's an absolute terrifying beating. But monoblue may be quite hard to achieve in Limited, and it's probably fine for Constructed to have a finisher that's at common.

This card's future will hang on how good it is in a two-colour deck. There'll probably be enough Flood to let it attack, but will its smaller size make that okay? We need to build some two-colour decks and find out.

Probably. Excess flood cards can always be aimed at yourself, so, in a 2 color deck, I expect this guy to be a 4/4 when you have 6 lands. Not insane, but a good place to start.

Perhaps the obvious answer is that this card's mediocre limited history notwithstanding, in this set it should be uncommon, and then Giant Hermit Crab can be blue's common "serpent"?

Edit: Corrected card name. Thanks, link.

Sounds reasonable. SotES would probably still be first pick material in mono-blue. Giant Hermit Crab just got a promotion.

I think Jack's idea is very sensible.
