Well, my rationale was that I wanted it usable as regenerate, with a hard choice; and figured the high cost might be enough of a deterrant against dropping a small fleet of dragons. You're really gonna want to be insulated against direct damage if you're going to risk that, and it's the kind of "Wow, I got away with it!" that people recite for weeks.
Might be too good, yeah. Five was off the cuff 'high and there's lots of fives on the card already'
As for the mirror - I think they costed it high because they were afraid of horrible abuse. They didn't see any, so I'm not too worried about downcosting it a bit. Whether the effect should live in the red part of the pie... that I don't know.
For Challenge # 068. Go at it.
To replace what I've taken, I submit Breader's Digestion, Mistress of the Machine and Razor Boomerang ;)
For Challenge # 068. Since one of the entries looked like it came out of the random Magic Generator, I figured I'd push the refresh button until something struck my eye. This... isn't quite that... I tweaked a couple of entries together, but it's close.
Submission for bad card for Challenge # 068. Mostly, I was going for a bit of "Um... wait." with a little of "Huh... no... not really."
Wait a minute...
Added Proboscidean Idol because Jack realized that I was bound to design a card around elephant tribal, and thought that it would be cool if I designed another one (?!)
For Challenge # 068, and riffing off Psichic Ankus. Jack put a lot of little things in his original card, and while I kept some elements of it, I just couldn't afford the space for colored artifact, or instant artifact (though this did have flash up to the very end. I just didn't think the card needed it.)
This card, of course, gets a little better in a world where Elephant is a logical tribe (like Treefolk in Lorwyn). I'm cool with the idea of that first sentence roughly saying "Unless you're a complete goober, lose 3 life at the beginning of your turn."
Rafiq, Who Climbs Clouds as an alternate fix for Flock of Seagulls. Alternate alternate fix for Flock of Seagulls? Stop running. And stop listening to music by hairdressers with too much time on their hands.
This cost may be a bit off, since its converted mana cost is the same as Mirror Gallery, but instead you get a crazy dragon as well. Outside of that, yeah, this certainly is a better card. I also like the Bottle of Suleiman reference, but I get the impression that the tap symbol may be important here. It's just too flexible, otherwise, allowing an aggro deck to drop 4 dragons on turn 5 (or turn 3 with acceleration) and at end of turn, too, after the chance for Wrath of God has passed.
How the heck did I make Rafiq, Who Climbs Clouds before seeing this card? It's like you're taunting me to make all my cards in this design be 'Elephant Tribal'...
For Challenge # 068, and a 'fixed' version (with a lot of extrapolation on) Flock of Seagulls. I like Vitenka's take on fixing the card with Leader of the Flock... but I feel like a bit of what made Flock of Seagulls special got lost in the translation. Leader of the Flock is a good card, but it isn't... quirky.
So I changed the creature type to something that rarely gains flying, then added a rider text for why we're going about turning all the elephants into Dumbos. The funny thing is, giving the Elephants flying was probably devastating enough... you didn't really have to kill Rafiq... but I suspect some people will anyways just to trigger Elaphaggedon.
By the by... if there isn't enough creatures to land on, the elephants start to explode. I don't know if you noticed that. That might be bad design, but I find the flavor to be hilarious, so I'm leaving it alone.
Good idea. But it still has a fiddly annoyance stuck in the card. You can't return the creature, give it +5 power, then gain life equal to the creature's power. I know there's no specific reason why the card has to do that... but all the ingredients are present... I assume some people will be upset to see that milk, eggs, flour, sugar and chocolate does not equal cake.
Ha! Actually, my first thought was "Hey! This looks it came right out of the Random Magic Card Generator!" ;)
Ugh. Good second bad card, too.
By the way, ttt, good bad card to start us off with. It took me a second read to see what the problem was. Silly me.
Nice.
This is hilarious because you do see cards like this in custom Magic forums all over the Internet.
Aerithan, Bringer of Hope. And my next "Fix it plz" card: Foresight
Fixing up Aerithan, Dragon of Paradox for Challenge # 068
Hmm. I always rather liked Bottle of Suleiman. So we have here a card that is either "Two very large dragons" or "Punched right in the face"
Which is pretty cool too; but downsides on a mythic aren't cricket.
And.. where's the paradox? That there's two even though he's a legend? Well, let's make hay from that, shall we? Let's ditch the legendary fiddliness for starters. Right, that's bold wording, suitable for a mythic. Change the rules; live the dream. Build a deck of nothing but legendary dragons.. (oooh, VERY tempted to add 'to dragons' now, but that weakens the card a lot)
Google says the name is an mmo and a hope goddess. Using the latter for the new card name.
Ok, mythically iconic. Dragons are 5/5. Period slash dot. That ALSO calls back to the bottle, which is nice. Oh, and they fly.
Ok; I think the "Regenerate by taking a dragon to the face" is pretty cool, we'll work the clone copy into that I think; it works as a regenerate too, after all. And now it's looking too weak to be a 5/5-for-5 boxy mythic. Let's make it an "or" rather than an "as well" on the cost. There; now it's 100% upside, with a side order of dragon to the face. Let's.. let's NOT allow the tokens to have all the abilities; many dragons is good, unending dragons after the opponent has dealt with the threat are unfun.
