The ultimate is interesting compared to Vraska the Unseen. It has more chance of failing, in particular in response to a Fog effect; most planeswalkers' ultimates are permanent rather than oneoff (though Garruk Wildspeaker's is also foiled by Fog).
For Challenge # 075, based on Phage the Untouchable.
I wondered which legendary creatures were most iconic as specific creatures, not just cards, and phage immediately seemed obvious. I wasn't sure of the best way of representing the abilities. I only had room for two and even that's a squeeze. But the ultimate is a doozy, doing what ultimates normally avoid and giving you an outright win, but with an extra hoop to jump through.
The Untouchable
Solid. Nice design. She's a Glorious Anthem but only on your turn, that can instead cast Celestial Purge on future turns if you need to. And casts a pretty harsh (but very variable) emblem that slightly evokes her creature version, Thalia, Guardian of Thraben.
If there's anything to criticise about this design it'll be the emblem. It'll do almost nothing against some decks while being utter game over against some others.
Yes, flavour-wise what you suggest would be great. I'm sure it'll happen eventually.
I made Thalia Ascended.
To give you an idea, here is one I had already done - and the inspiration for the challenge
Jolrael of Jamuraa.
Added (((Scarred Plunderer))) and rather than recreate the 2nd card which is already in my Storm (When you cast this spell, copy it for each spell cast before it this turn.)(http://multiverse.heroku.com/cardsets/132) set I have linked it here Burial at Sea.
in the card's set (the main Pirate faction is
)
The set is an allied colour set hence the
Oops, it was supposed to be "return to hand". Although as you point out, in some ways it would be weaker if you had to cast it immediately because sometimes you can't.
I don't know. I don't really think you need to restrict yourself to one. I think the idea of all the booty cards going off at once is exciting, and should be encouraged.
Oh... hey, this isn't flashback with commando trigger. This is supposed to cast (not put on the battlefield, I assume) every turn? Hmm... kind of like Cipher++ eh?
It also has this weird conundrum. I have a 2/1 creature in play, and there's an empty board. Pirate Raid is in my graveyard, and you have a lot of artifacts in your deck. What's the correct play? Don't attack. I don't have a target for Pirate Raid, and will be forced to exile it.
Not attacking isn't very fun. I'd suggest either removing the tough targeting restriction ('target player sacrifices an artifact' works here) or just returning the card to your hand. Personally, I think your better off returning the card... but I'd understand if you wanted to make cards with different Booty costs than Casting Costs. After all, this set seems to be getting very graveyard oriented. Maybe it's natural for pirates to interact with the dead zone? Sure is a lot of burying going on here.
Oh, all that, or trigger once, like I thought it did. I still think that sounds the most exciting. I could see people all out attack, and lose a lot of material advantage, just to make their graveyard explode. Sounds fun.
And another, making really quite surprisingly many pirate mechanics I've considered, Pirate Raid with Booty.
For Challenge # 074
OK, another treasure-uncovering mechanic. I think the name is a bit too goofy to be printed, but maybe there's something similar? "Loot" would be perfect but already means something else.
I wanted another simple way of representing digging up treasure, and this seemed to work reasonably well, providing some repeatability but a) conditionally and b) on an effect which has a diminishing effect as it's repeated.
There's still a problem with the rules. I want to say "only one booty card triggers per creature" but I'm not sure how to fit that on.
Thank you.
Yes, this is fun.
I do love this card, and the flavor of it.
Ha! That was worth it for the first line of text alone.
It's a pity that hideaway needs to be attached to destroyable permanents. If there was ever an argument for permanents that could go into the command zone, this would be a great example. Who wants to exile 4 of the best cards in your own deck? Whatever. It's a fun card either way.
