Hee! This tells a story, doesn't it!
Considering where Naga originate, I'm not surprised that Seshiro the Anointed is a snake, but Sidisi, Brood Tyrant is not. There's a lot more to the original Indian myth of nagas than "They're snake-people". It would kind of be like saying Djinn are technically Spirits, and lumping them together.
Viashino, however, are probably Viashino because they were Viashino in 1998, well before the great creature type update. That said, I can get behind an argument for not making them base lizards. They always reminded me of Jurassic Park's version of Velociraptors, and I'm not down for calling dinosaurs lizards.
@ Link: I like the Contract mechanic. Serf reminds me a bit of 'Minion' but is much more specific (as in, Minion sounds like it could be an evergreen creature type, whereas Serf sounds set specific.)
@ Jack V: They're OK designs, but they don't blow me away. I was really hoping to see something a bit more serious (some feel very 'Un' to me.) For example, creatures like the Naga or Aetherborn felt right to me, and gave WotC new creature types to play with.
Also, does anyone know why Viashino are called Viashino instead of 'Lizard' people? Why are Avens 'Birds' and not Aven? Why isn't 'Naga' also a 'Snake' or 'Serpent'? Weird world we live in.
Coal Miner with "Miner".
Although I need to get to some types that specifically matter, like in Boldwyr Intimidator, not just exist.
See Challenge # 159.
"Miner" seems unused potential. I walked through my memory of tolkien, seeing what fit but hadn't found a place yet.
And pairs with "Merchant".
I also considered "Smith", but "artificer" covers most of the same thing. Not all, but enough. But maybe more normal swordsmiths should be artificers, not only people making gadgets.
Oh yes, serf makes a lot of sense here. I like this.
This is an interesting way to encourage your opponent not to block. I really like the creativity.
See Callous Landowner and (((Challenge #159))).
I made Master of Indentures, Landowner's Representative and Callous Landowner.
See Challenge # 159.
See Challenge # 159.
Hillway Shepherd, herder, sheep
See Challenge # 159.
There's a number of "something-herd" creatures. Plus some angels called "shepherd" who probably shouldn't count. I debated between "shepherd" and "herder" for the creature type, since you could use shepherd for other goatherd, etc, but decided the more generic name would be more useful.
Immature Dragon
See Challenge # 159.
"Baby". I was thinking what types could go with animal species, where 'classes' don't make sense. I couldn't think of maybe, but "cub" was one. After a lot of hesitation I switched to "baby" which is slightly more generic. There's a problem with english which has so many different words for this, when it would be nicer if there was a single one.
Chief Courier messenger
See Challenge # 159.
There's enough cards that could be messengers (instead of soldiers or another type) it might work as a new type.
Here there's a messenger-lord that loots each time a messenger attacks, with a bonus if they're blocked.
ETA: Assuming "messenger" and "angel" should still be distinct :)
Revolutionary Leader, courtier.
See Challenge # 159.
There's a lot of monarchs, nobles, flunkies, etc who don't have a good creature type. Sometimes it's advisor. Usually magic only has monarchs who are also soldiers. You could roll those up into a "courtier" role. I considered "noble", but I thought "courtier" was better because it could include hangers-on. And nobles either hang around at court, or go out and do stuff, and would get a title either way.
I considered a companion type "labourer" which would also fit, but then I remembered rebel already existed.
ETA: And ideally "courtier" would work where wizards used to use "lord", on leaders who pump a particular creature type. Although there maybe "leader" or "noble" would work better.
It does have some rabbits :)
Oh cool, yay beaver people!
I'm still surprised Magic doesn't have Hares / Rabbits or Mice / White Rats haha.
Added Ahmik Logslogger. Because Magic needs Beaver People, I guess.
For (((Challenge #159))). The Ahmik are a group of Beaver people, presumably for some Native American inspired plane. They like to build, so they're white. But they don't know why they build... it all just comes naturally, and impulsively... which makes them Green.
Maybe this is our Fortification race? Not sure. I wasn't planning on keeping them restricted to just simple structures, though. It's possible that, in whatever world their story takes place in, that they're building some mammoth structure with an obvious if not elusive grand design, and they don't understand why.
I tinkered with an idea though the investment seemed to steep for a set that isn't planned to include a tribal component: Gentle Missionary and Flameslinger Missionary Sacred Frenzy Rage of Taalmi. Admittedly there's no flavor difference from clerics, and cultist was only chosen as a type to place an emphasis on conversion.
Huh; Ocean Depths reminded me of my old creation - Peg-Finned Pete. Shark that cares about sharks.
I think the merchant subtype could be cool, and yes, many creatures could / should be retconned as 'merchants'.
