I'm sorry. Somehow I missed the "may." Disregard my statement about it feeling like a drawback. :)
Among the several things I don't like:
• The mana cost is so darn ugly
• The red ability probably should change. It's the only one your opponents can choose that has a chance of doing nothing.
Any suggestions for good
choices?
Reminds me of Zzzyxas's Abyss for some reason... :p

The 'cat' in the cat tokens ability should be capitalized. The blue sphinx def seems stronger.
But it's deliberately "may" so at worst, they have a 4/X and you don't get any benefit. Whereas if they've only smaller creatures, they lose one a turn. And if they have a large creature, they still have to deal with the risk you have a pump spell. But I agree, I'd like it to be more interactive. But I don't like just "fight target creature" because that doesn't have the guessing element, and is oppressive if you can just mow down all the small creatures.
See Challenge # 115, last member of the Syzygy Sphinx cycle.
Another that doesn't fit the "choose one" mold, but is intended to be similar. I'm not sure how much the gameplay here will be interesting and how much it will be repetitive, but there's several possibilities: if you avoid casting things to get back better spells; if you're at risk of dying from the life loss; if your opponent makes a mistake in guessing what to try to avoid giving back.
All of the other members of my cycle give the opponent a choice (particularly Riddler of the Spheres!), but this one doesn't. I feel like that's an error.
Mm. It does make this card much more about that, but there's probably no avoiding that. Yeah, good thought.
You're right, of course. This is a combo piece, where as the white one isn't.
This is much more Johnnifiable. Mystic Speculation, Crown of Flames, Haru-Onna, etc etc, and this goes crazy.
But yes, adding a peek at the hand would probably be okay.
Why not allow casting the card without paying for it? It could be abused, but that would take some setting up, and it's not like this has haste.
Well, you're already bleeding the Sphinx creature type to black. And black does get to look at hands, it's just normally accompanied by discard.
I love the idea of a "name a card" cycle, but I can't help but feel that this one will seem weaker to players than the white one.
I love this ability, but this guy is a bit outshined by Voidstone Gargoyle, isn't it?
Edit: I guess this is better in a couple of ways.
Oh yes, I like "name a card" cycle a lot. (And I agree with your comments on the other two, that I like trying to preserve "name a card in either deck", but it may be too much to achieve.)
I would at least like to see the attacker make the choice, because otherwise this is almost a drawback.
I think the problem with this one is that the second ability has a potential to be useless, or even harmful only to you.
Ah! If I don't use the auto-replace, I can make unicode nonbreaking space, and unicode m-dash (ALT+numpad-0160, ALT+numpad-0151). That seems to work. Thank you, all.
White can be hard in cycles like this because I'd its tendency toward life gain. Both of these options are generally weaker than the blue choices. What if it have a choice between tokens that came out attacking vs. +1/+1 counters for all your creatures? ...But then that has a similar problem of automatic choice.
I find ALT codes to be easiest for the em dash (ALT+ 0151) and the bullet (ALT+7). That, or I type them on my phone.
This is a very nice way for a sphinx to give a riddle.
Hm. No, I can't find a way to do that. Proper DTP software would allow widow/orphan control to prevent punctuation symbols slipping onto a new line, but HTML doesn't have a good way to do that.
I have a cycle on its way. So far just Denouncing Sphinx, Soulsap Sphinx and Reckless Sphinx exist.
See Challenge # 115. I originally had something like this ability for my blue member of the cycle. But I realised that this was a great opportunity to do something red that has a "blue feel" to it. I think this has ended up feeling both Sphinxlike and red, but the Sphinxishness of it rather interferes with it being any fun to play. :/
I'd like there to be times when you'll want to name something in your deck, and times when you'll want to name something in the opponent's deck. I fear this doesn't really do that: in a monored deck you'll virtually never be able to cast anything from the opponent's deck. But even if you're only naming cards in your deck, that still works, sort of.
Created for Challenge # 115. I wanted to encourage circumstances where you might name cards in the opponent's deck and might name cards in your deck. This isn't quite that, though, because you know what cards are in your hand. Perhaps I could let this one come with an ETB trigger to let you look at the opponent's hand? Not very black though :/
Created for Challenge # 115.
I decided I wanted my Sphinx cycle to all start with naming a card. They all need strong colour cues in order to feel correct in their nonblue colour even though they're sphinxes. What's a white thing to do with naming a card? Nevermore. Is this Sphinxy? I think I'd argue yes: how do you choose what to name? You have to have some kind of insight, foresight or knowledge of what your opponent's playing.
Thank you!
Copying the unicode character isn't perfect, but is probably fine for now, that's what unicode is for after all :)
Do you know if there's any easy way to avoid the m-dash on a line by itself? If it's not obvious, I might just go back to a colon, that's not official, but is plenty clear.
