I have no idea the flavor of this card. I'll have to overhaul this whole thing i'm sure 3 years from now when I get past my other 512 canon trash dumps.
For now, I'll make a stronger version of the reference card.
The creative treatment also needs some work. Flavor text that explains how the Soul-Chains work or a name that reeks more of sadism, ruthlessness or disloyalty.
Well the body itself doesn't seem uber good, maybe the mana ramp (which we've all agreed for this purpose is fine i think) makes it good.. So then we're faced with it's efficient because of the text, which can easily be solved with getting it out on turn 4 or 5 rather than so early, where that mana could be gamebreaking potentially
Agreed, I will definitely remember to keep mana ramp on creatures in green, or upon-death occasionally in red.
This being a 'ritual' phoenix, i'm wondering if there is anyway to blend it into a sort of ritual permanent? maybe this is that, just done with a bit of a bend.
Red does get rituals; but mana on a creature is much more of a green thing.
It would feel more pheonixy if you got the mana when it died, I think.
But I don't have any real objections to this, unusual certainly; but as long as its only one card every now and then, I don't have a problem with this amount of colour bend.
You may be right... However red doesn't mind burning whenever it gets a chance, and having freedom is a very red want both flavorfully and mechanically. I suppose the ramp is quite green, but not exclusively so. Red does like to fight in combat and i think it's fair to have some mana ramp tied to that. Green really hogs mana ramp, while red is also guilty of hogging burn.
Also another reason to change it to power would be that in the upcoming set we have some high-toughness cyber creatures (not to mention those damn fatties hippose)
As for your question, i guess fling could be either, or both. I suppose it's quite a bit more black than red though... I think it seems like a bend for sure
Would you suggest Fling being hybrid card? That's a thought for sure. Usually only deals damage when it's attached to some Drain Life. It's like a mix of Bone Splinters and Rite of Consumption. WotC is right now trying out having most of the life loss cards being converted to cards that deal damage.
Actually I'm not sure what's even going with Skeleton Archer and Epicure of Blood being new cards in the same set. Since we're in that territory, is now also supposed to be getting more flash with cards like Hired Blade and such. I can't really say I agree with either of those decisions. IMO of all colors is perhaps the most balanced in terms of flavor, mechanics, and the combination of two. It's pie/flavor is flexible yet well defined and easy to understand.
Where it's at now feels right for costing and rarity, except there is the 2for1 aspect making it harder to judge. Any cheaper and it would be too strong. Lower cmc range would make it too narrow. Changing cmc to power might look different. It might just be fine was it is.
Oh, I missed your response. The problem right now seems to be not whether exile exists at common, but the fact that it hits multiple creatures.
That's both an issue at common and probably the reason this was undercost (though you apparently increased the cost since). It's still not a typical common and punishes going wide more than white is likely to do.
Absolutely. That's the way they're doing this kind of effect these days.
At that point, though, this is something like a 2-power hasty flyer that "costs 1". Which... probably isn't overpowered actually since you can't chain the mana from several of them together, and you can't actually cast it until 3. Cool.
With my first comment I must have thought that the opponent of that creature loses the life or something - idk really.
This is still really, really bad at 4 CMC. You could remove that
from that mana cost.

So... less than Pacifism? It could be annoying on a creature that attacks each turn if able, but it only really helps racing.
I'm not certain the cost is there yet. This is Visions of Brutality.

Oh i see, sorry for misunderstanding!

My issue isn't the mana production, sorry; I meant this is a pretty cheap, aggressive flyer, which isn't very red
The 'ritual' is kinda a sorcery or instant though :)
I meant as it is is a colour bleed into red; but one I find is ok, as long as not done too often.
The on-death bit was, well, that's what phoenices are famous for, right? Regenerating in a fire rather than staying dead?

yes. Like Radha
I think this could definitely be more black if toughness was changed to power
Not sure where you get that comparison...
It's basically Deathlink (whenever ~ deals damage, controller loses that much life)

So pretty much a bad double strike? IMO Battle Mastery looks godly when compared to this.
Add
during your post combat/next main phase?
:)
