I qouls use Fling as basis to cost and word this card.

While the restriction to life loss is making it generally worse toughness comes by cheaper. I think {1}{b} is alright.

At common I wouldn't start out with hevay color commitment at low converted mana costs.

Would you suggest Fling being {r/b} hybrid card? That's a thought for sure. Usually {b} only deals damage when it's attached to some Drain Life. It's like a mix of Bone Splinters and Rite of Consumption. WotC is right now trying out having most of the life loss cards being converted to cards that deal damage.

Actually I'm not sure what's even going with Skeleton Archer and Epicure of Blood being new cards in the same set. Since we're in that territory, {b} is now also supposed to be getting more flash with cards like Hired Blade and such. I can't really say I agree with either of those decisions. IMO {b} of all colors is perhaps the most balanced in terms of flavor, mechanics, and the combination of two. It's pie/flavor is flexible yet well defined and easy to understand.

I think this could definitely be more black if toughness was changed to power

Also another reason to change it to power would be that in the upcoming set we have some high-toughness cyber creatures (not to mention those damn fatties hippose)

As for your question, i guess fling could be either, or both. I suppose it's quite a bit more black than red though... I think it seems like a bend for sure
