I loved them in Three Card Blind. A deck of Dwarven Ruins, Slumbering Dragon, Slith Firewalker or Svyelunite Temple, Phantasmal Bear, Boomerang could do quite well. Of course, the Peat Bog cycle were better for that, unless you wanted the one mana repeatedly like for Drifter il-Dal.
But outside extremely constrained formats or circumstances like JMG's forestless forestwalk deck, yeah, they don't get much use. I'd call this a medium upgrade rather than a small upgrade, but it seems fine to me.
I like 'em; but yeah, they're not popular. ETB tapped and only provides a one-shot boost once and then goes away?
In a set where land-death-matters they'd be a great reprint; but most people mostly won't like 'em.
Svyelunite Temple had value back in the day, because it meant you could threaten a Counterspell but only have to keep 1 and back for it.
But Oooh! I have such a set! Reprint time!
Used to play these back in the day. Didn't really see other people play with them. Don't know why, because I thought they were the gas. But I don't think people were willing to build their decks around them. Havenwood Battleground was clutch in my Mono-Black Lumbering Satyr group game deck, for example.
For what's it's worth, Wizards returned to these cards with its Geothermal Crevice cycle. And while those lands were crucial in the Terravore deck, that was more of a trick. People really didn't play them. Again, I don't know why, because I still thought they were good. But by this point, I'd guess the answer was because one could only have so many etb tapped lands, and Coastal Tower was more important.
How often do you see Svyelunite Temple being played ? honestly? A small upgrade seemed fine.
sure is Reprints both functional and direct are ok to add to created sets in my opinion - as long as they are on-theme.
you bet it is
Matched cost of Wrap in Flames but left as Instant.
you guessed it
Yes, it is a functional reprint. I am an old school player having started with alpha/beta. As a result, I like doing old school nods every now and then. Yes First Strike is tertiary in black nowadays but does still happen.
Currently a strictly better Svyelunite Temple. IMO the card doesn't need the upgrade.
REPRINT: Undermine.
REPRINT: Absorb.
Strictly better Wrap in Flames in that it's an instant and costs
less. Wrap wasn't that good of a card though.
Usually cards called "blinding something" are white since bright light is associated with that color (Blinding Beam, Blinding Light).
A functional reprint of Lim-Dûl's High Guard is preeetty weird. As you are probably well aware, first strike in black is done very rarely nowadays - usually being reserved for retro reasons in Black Knight.
REPRINT: Scout's Warning.
The "Other Knights" I was referring to was in the last ability as shown in my corrected syntax above in which I decided to omit it.
Though I can't say that I'm fond of the "other creatures get the boost" thing that has been going on with Lords. Has anybody played against a board with Captain of the Watch, two Veteran Armorsmiths, and Veteran Swordsmith? Now, if they just stated "Soldier creatures you control get... (Including this creature.)" it would be just easy to say that, "okay, so your soldiers all get +2/+3", but since all of them say "Other" you pretty much have to calculate the boost for EACH OF THEM again and again which SUCKS REALLY HARD.
Tahazzar, as has been established with other "Lords", they do not pump themselves hence the "Other Knights" which has become the default wording for these kid of creatures.
You are both correct. Yes Alex, there is a faction of G/W Knights called the Deathwatch (Paladins). Will revise to be more G/W. Also, there are over 120 White or G/W knights to choose from in actual cards, plus a whopping ONE mono-green Knight.
When looking at tribal legends though, you need to consider the implied commander deck. There are 16 green or G/W Knights that could go into the commander deck this leads. Admittedly, though, there are 19 red or R/W Knights, and an impressive 31 black or B/W knights. So G/W wouldn't be the most obvious combination for the tribal Knight legend.
The other reason for this being G/W would be storyline reasons. If this set has a G/W faction of knights, a legendary leader of them makes sense. But in that case I'd expect to see something a bit greener in the mechanics here.
> First strike
> Other Knight creatures you control get +1/+1 and have first strike.
> As long as all creatures you control are Knights, ~ has double strike.
Doesn't need the "other" since it's a Knight itself. It's a minor functional change if he himself loses the knight type.
There's really nothing
about this card... First/double strike + anthem looks like a heavy-
design however.
yeah am trying to come up with a name for the leader of the Deathwatch and then will rename this.
I might suggest a different name. "Shaku" to me is unstoppably close to Shauku, Endbringer, a very black character.
